Priest in an Outdoor Venue

Kelly, on August 20, 2019 at 9:15 AM Posted in Minnesota Planning 0 1
We are getting married in a garden in Eau Claire! We were hoping to have a priest come to our ceremony, but he explained he can only marry us if it is in a church... anyone in the twin cities or western WI know if any priests that will perform ceremonies outside of a church??

    Hey there Kelly!

Welcome to the WeddingWire community Smiley smile

Are you planning on having a catholic wedding ceremony conducted by a catholic priest?

I’ve done some research for you online, in particular, I read the code of Canon Law. Can.1118.1 states that a “marriage between Catholics or between a Catholic party and a non-Catholic baptized party is to be celebrated in a parish church. It can be celebrated in another church or oratory with the permission of the local ordinary or pastor.”

Can.118.2 does note that the bishop can allow a Catholic marriage to be celebrated in another suitable place. By reading this, it seems it’s not totally impossible under canon law to get married in a Catholic ceremony outdoors, however, the decision is left up to the diocesan bishop.

I would recommend that you return to your priest and discuss how you would go about seeking approval from the bishop and the likelihood of this being granted.

If you were happy to proceed without a priest and would rather find an officiant, the WeddingWire vendor directory lists a ton - Grand Rapids Wedding Officiants. It’s possible to filter by religion, types, languages, etc.

Does this information help at all?
