Premarital counseling, out of budget? Online options?

Smarie1993, on May 2, 2022 at 7:16 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 5
We got engaged and started planning our wedding without considering premarital counseling and now I'm considering it.
Thing is, we cannot afford it, and there are not many options near us to begin with. We have already moved our budget around so much to accommodate the few things we are doing for our wedding.
Financially, it's just not in our monthly budget and my fiance currently works 12 hours a day, Mon-Fri and cannot afford to take time off anyways, he already has to take time off for allergy shots. Are cheaper online options worth it where we can make our own schedule? We already have kids together, so that's not something we need to work through, but there are definitely a couple things I wouldn't mind brushing up on to strengthen our relationship. Like intimacy related things especially, and communication. Wedding is September.

Does your insurance cover counseling with a licensed therapist? You don't need to search for "premarital counseling" specifically.

His insurance does with copay, but we can't even afford copay for it. All money we have right now is going to wedding and his allergy shots. I currently have state insurance until I'm back to work again (I'm a sahm to our 8 month old) and the only place that takes my insurance does not cover this kind of counseling. They're impossible to get into anyway.

Some providers offer sliding scale. Also, many psychology PhD/PsyD programs have community clinics where doctoral level trainees provide low cost/free therapy under strict supervision of licensed psychologists.

Another option if you would like is workbooks. "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work" is written by a psychologist, John Gottman, and is based on his decades of couples research. It has exercises you can do with your partner, and you can probably borrow it for free from your local library (I saw it available on my library's free Kindle offerings before).
