Personal Vows

Jasmine, on July 27, 2021 at 5:53 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 14

So I finished my vows last week and I'm super excited but more so nervous that it might be too much or too long. I practiced them a couple times and I feel fine but I know it's going to be different when everyone's staring at me and my voice echoes through the microphone. It's nerve-wracking and I'm afraid that I'm going to flub them up lol. I even sent them to my parents for verification and they both seem to love it but it's still driving me crazy.

How many of you are writing your own vows?? How is/was your journey??

I wrote mine and had my bridesmaids read over them since they weren't there for the ceremony. If you're worried about length as compared to your FS's, could you ask your officiant to read over both yours and your FS's to see if the length is comparable? As for flubbing on the day of, I'd simply practice over and over until you're really comfortable with the words. I personally didn't have any issues, but I'm also fairly comfortable public speaking (I'm a teacher) and we had a tiny gathering due to COVID restrictions.

Thanks Nicole. It makes sense. Unfortunately, my FH hasn't finished his yet so it might be a little bit before our officiant reads them lol.

I hear that. My husband didn’t do his until the night before, so I just crossed my fingers that they were around the same length. I think mine were a bit longer, but not enough to be noticeable on the day of.

I already feel like mine will be longer. Like he's literally a man of little words and it won't help that he's going to be the center of attention. He hates attention of any kind and he's not very articulate sometimes so that freaks him out that he's going to be speaking in front of everyone.

    We are writing ours too!

And our officiant is going to see they're a similar length and similar tone.

I've already written mine and have told my fiance how many words they are or how many minutes, roughly they will be, so he can plan accordingly.

Like your future husband, mine too is a man of few words, but if his are shorter that would be in line with his personality - he doesn't say much but he means what he says, so if he says it at all you can take him at his word, and this would be how our friends and family expect him to be.

I joke that I get four 'quarterly updates' (he's an accountant!) on his feelings for me - my birthday, our anniversary, christmas and valentines day, which are the four times a year he gives me a card, haha!

Maybe if you're still nervous, you could share them here, and we could give you feedback?

Yea, I wouldn't mind if his is shorter. I'm already expecting it to be that way. But that's funny with the quarterly updates lol. I think I'm just going to keep mine locked up lol. My parents already read them and they said they love it so I have a little bit more confidence but still having to read them aloud is the nerve-wracking part.

However you respond in the moment will be the real you, so don't worry too much! People expect tears and nerves at a wedding, and it's actually quite lovely and moving when it happens, so don't panic (easier said than done, I know!)

Lol thanks. In the meantime, I'll definitely keep practicing, at least.

For our wedding, we wrote vows together, and recited them like traditional vows (we said the same ones).

For our vow renewal, we're each writing our own. Even though it isn't for two more years, I've already written a first draft - I'm sure I will cull and pick at them over time. I do best when I write something, take a break, then come back to it when I've almost forgotten what was in it. It makes it easier for me to edit and hear anything that might not actually work.

I can tell you from my wedding, though, that you will definitely take longer than you think, and things might happen. I had a small giggle fit in the middle of mine. To combat this for our vow renewal, I set a "straight read" time limit that is about 15 seconds shorter than the actual max time I want my vows to be, to account for unexpected happenings.

We're writing personal vows, and I'm planning on having my MOH read over it to make sure it flows well lol. I have a small speech talking about FH and what I love about him, what he means to me, then I go into my vows.

It's been up and down with mine lol. One day I love them, then the next I scrap them and rewrite them only to edit them again a few weeks later lol. I've been practicing reading them out loud with the song I'm walking into playing in the background just so I can picture the day in my mind. I've cried every time lol!! But I'm embracing it because that's who I am, and as long as FH can understand me, that's all I care about lol.

I'm getting married on Saturday . . . and still not done with my vows. I am a published author so I thought it would be easy, but it totally isn't! I've written draft after draft and I'm still not happy with them. FH evidently finished his weeks ago.

That makes sense. Sometimes I'm the same way. Take a break and get back to it another time. I have no idea how this is gonna turn out. Should be fun(ny) lol

Lol right. That's all that matters. We are our own worst critic for sure. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be a blubbering mess 😂

Oh wow. Well congrats on being a published author. That's pretty cool. I have a few things I'd like to get published, sometime before I die lol. I get it though. You can be good at something but sometimes when it gets super personal, you clamp up and overly examine every detail. I wish you the best in finishing. Who knows, if you don't finish, you might feel something the day of and end up winging it.
