Passport &New last name

Cassidy, on June 30, 2016 at 9:27 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 12

Our wedding is 10/22/16 and we will be going on a cruise to Mexico in December for our honeymoon.

My boarding pass is in my soon-to-be last name.

Should I get my passport now and then change my name on it after we get married?

OR

Should I attempt to get my passport as soon at my last name is changed.

This is my first cruise, and my first time out of the country, so tips are greatly appreciated!

Passports can take at least two months if not more. Name changes are the same timeframe. You can expedite it, but it is still cutting it very close IMO. Any chance you can have your maiden name on the boarding pass?

Depends on when in december. You would first have to get your name legally changed before even applying for your passover and they can take 6-8 weeks.

I think the best bet is to do everything in your maiden name. .change your boarding pass and wait till after the honeymoon to change your name legally.

The names have to match. Call the airline or go online and change your boarding pass to the name you will have when you are flying.

In my opinion, it's cutting it too close to your honeymoon. From a married lady - it takes time to get your certified marriage license back and go through with the name change process. The passport can take weeks, and I think you are asking for trouble. If it were me, I would have your boarding pass changed to your maiden name. Unfortunately, you may need to pay a fee for that - but you shouldn't have booked it in your married name!

Just re-read your question- do you have a passport now?? If not, you need to get one ASAP. It takes a while to get a passport! Then, you can change it after your honeymoon - you have up to a year from your initial passport to change the name on it without any fees (I just did this a couple months ago, because I got my first passport for our honeymoon last year).

Get the passport asap in your current name. You can update it with your married name with in one year of marriage for free.

Some states require a wait between changing your name on your social security card and your drivers license. I am in FL and could not do that t on the same day due to systems not updating immediately. It took a full month for me to totally change my name.

Also you need your proper birth certificate for the state you were born in, not the fancy one with your feet prints on it. The actual certificate from the department of birth and death. Which can take time to arrive.

It can take a while to get your passport (not including the time it takes to get your name changed after the wedding). It's been several years since I got my passport, but when I applied, the wait time was 10-13 weeks. In order to apply for a passport with your new last name, your other legal documents will have to all be changed to the new name before you start your passport paperwork. I do not think it's reasonable to change your name and apply for a passport within two months after your wedding.

It will be so much easier to change your boarding pass to your maiden name, apply for a passport now, and wait to change your name legally after your honeymoon.

    Yikes.

Either change the name on your boarding pass, or risk not being able to board the plane.

Honeymoon was paid and booked by my future SIL. If I would have booked it, I would have done it in my maiden name. So that explains why I am having to deal with this now!

    1. Someone told me that I may just be able to change my name on the passport quicker than getting a whole new one. (Doesn't seem to be the truth.)

    2. Someone else told me a I may not even need a passport for the cruise? (Just bring forms of ID and marriage license. )

Looks like my best bet is to change boarding pass to maiden name just to be safe.

You can use the passport ID card for Mexico and Canada.

It's can take longer than a few days just to get your name changed. first you have to wait for your marriage certificate to arrive if you can not pick it up at your clerks office, Then you have to go to the social security office in town, then the DMV, the submit all of the papers required for the passport including your proper registars certificate. Please google ' requirements for a passport '

It depends when you are changing your name. From my understanding, your boarding pass needs to match your name on the passport, especially flying international. You probably should have used your current last name on the boarding pass. Until your name is legally changed, you have to use your current identity.

Ok, I just read your update. For number 1, I'm going through this right now with an expired passport and my destination wedding in Mexico is coming up. I found that you can change your name within a year of receiving the passport free of charge. After that, you have to reapply. You do need a passport if you are entering another country's territory, even on a ship.

I'm changing my last name after our trip, so I will be doing the name change on my new passport asap.
