Passport for honeymoon???

Makiesha, on June 13, 2021 at 12:56 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 11

Hi all!

We are getting married 9/25/21 and will be going to Mexico for our honeymoon. I do not have a passport, but am wondering when the best time to apply for one would be. I'm not sure if I should apply for one now and do a name change after the honeymoon (if I even can), or wait until after my name has been changed and then apply for my passport. For reference, I'm in Wisconsin.

I would like to go in October to the Baja Peninsula after the wedding which would mean applying for a passport soon. Would I be able to hold off on submitting everything to change my name until after our honeymoon or is that a no-no?

Our other option is choosing a different location in Mexico and going in February (we want to make sure it's warm there when we go). If we go that route, would that give me enough time to change my name on my license and social security card, and then apply for a passport?

Sorry if I sound dumb, I've just never traveled internationally before. Thanks in advance for your help!

Right now, the passport offices are insanely backed up, so you may not even receive it back in time for September. I heard they aren’t even processing expedited applications. However, if you are able to get your passport now, you can change your name within a year of receiving it for free. Hope that helps!

I agree with Nicole, apply now for your passport with your maiden name and change to your married name after your trips. I would hate for you to have any of your travels be interrupted due to your legal name on your paperwork. Good luck ❤️

If you apply for your passport after your name change in September, you will almost certainly not have it by your October honeymoon. And if it does come in the nick of time, the entire wait for it will be agonizing. You don’t really have an option here, unless you want to delay your honeymoon.

When I applied for my passport during normal times, it took just around 4 weeks. I lost my passport during the pandemic and applied for a replacement in August last year, and it did not come until November.
    Hope that helps.

My brother just applied for his passport a few days ago, and even though he paid the expedited fee they said the wait would be at least 2 weeks. Without expedited fee, it’s 3+ months. Definitely get it asap and pay the expedited fee!

Sorry I meant to say the wait would be at least 6 weeks with the expedited fee!

Book travel in your current name and apply for your passport ASAP. When you marry, you still have to wait for your marriage certificate before changing social security, and that has to be done before your license or passport can be so I don’t think you’d be able to get it done for October even in non-covid times.

I would recommend applying right now. I applied for my passport in March and it was a 12 week process.

Today! And pay the extra fee to get it expedited. It took
FH about 5 months to get his back and my cousin 3 months and they submitted their paperwork on the same day.

Echoing the PPs, I would definitely get your passport now! I renewed mine recently and it took about 3 months. It might take even longer for a first time passport, so I would definitely pay the extra fee to have it expedited. You can change your name after you get back from your honeymoon

Agree about applying ASAP - like tomorrow! All of your travel documents need to match your current name, which will not be changed until after the wedding. So you need your passport to have your current name. It takes a few weeks for your marriage license to come in, and then a few weeks/months to change your social, license, etc. You should be able to update your name on the passport for free since it’s so soon after applying.

Absolutely do it now and travel in your maiden name. The Passport was my last name change step since I know it was a headache. I'd pay for the expedited just in case. I just changed my name (marriage). I mailed it Friday May 7th, and received it June 10th. I live in NYC but I don't know that that makes any difference. This was with sending it in "next-day", paying for expedited ($60), and paying the $11 to have them overnight it back to me. I do think brand new passports usually take a little more time too. It's very normal to travel for your honeymoon with your maiden name. (When you come back from your honeymoon, just change your name on your passport within a year of getting your initial passport. That way you don't have to pay the $110 fee)
