Parents friends invites

Rachel, on February 5, 2024 at 12:32 AM Posted in Planning 0 3
Not counting distant family that I don’t have a relationship with, my parents want to invite 20 of their friends Ann’s fiancés parents want to invite 24 of theirs. This means half family, and almost half our friends and half parents friends ….

I am very keep the peace and make all happy but I’d really prefer to cut like 25 to 30 guests given it’s like backyard venue, buffet style on plastic ware, aka the vibe was meant to be intimate and not networking event to impress. We didn’t assume any financial help but it ends up being 1/3rd us, his parents and mine just about. Still, half is family… would you throw down to make a little cut or just go with the flow hoping not all distant people show up?

Whomever is contributing money to the wedding will be able to have the power to have a say in this, so if you're paying 1/3 then your parents might feel entitled to their own guests. The only real way to control things is to decline the financial help and plan what you want.

If you don’t want them there, then give back any contributions from parents so that you and fiancé can plan the wedding you want. Parents can host their friends in their home at a separate time that is unrelated to your wedding. Also make sure to work with a therapist on how to create and maintain healthy boundaries and learn how to say no and walk away.

If they are helping pay for the wedding, then they are entitled to invite their own guests. If you want a smaller guest list, I would just give your families their money back and cut their friends from the guestlist.
