Katie, on June 11, 2013 at 11:37 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 16

What do you REALLY need to bring for a week away at a tropical location?

I feel like i want to buy 7 pieces of lingerie, 7 bathing suits, 7 dresses, 7 flip flops, 7 shorts. lol... but i'm awesome at overpacking...

So the question is: how much of each thing are you bringing?

You really only need 3 or 4 bathing suits as you can rotate them and hand wash them in the shower. I am bringing 2 dressier outfits for dinners at the nicer places and 2 casual sun dresses along with 3 pairs of shorts and several tank tops. I am bringing black sandals, brown sandals, sneakers (FH mentioned maybe doing "adventure" activities) and flip flops (1 pair). Also bringing 3 cover ups, a hat, sunglasses, and some new lingerie since it is our honeymoon after all....

I always bring a bathing suit for every day because I'm obsessed with bathing suits. I pretty much live in my bathing suit on vacation. For seven days I would bring two or three cover ups and a bunch of sundresses. I don't like wearing shorts, so I only brought one pair and a few tank tops. I brought brown wedges, black wedges, and beach flip flops. If you're going on adventerous excursions or like to work out maybe bring some sneakers.

I brought a bathing suit for every day since that is what I spent the majority of my time in!

I checked into the restaurants dress codes at our hotel. They have 2 restaurants that require "dressy" and the rest are "casual." I live in sun dresses so I'll take a bunch of those and quite a few bathing suits. A few pairs of shorts and tanks in case we do an excursion. I don't really plan on leaving the resort because it's an all-inclusive so bathing suits and cover ups are my biggest priority.

Just a tip... I've heard from a ton of people...if you are going to an all-inclusive and you plan on drinking, take your own cups. Apparently they usually give out those small plastic cups but if you take your own Tumbler, they will fill it up for you Smiley smile

Big spray, sunscreen, aloe, and maybe even some soothing lotion for after you get big bitten. We went to St John (USVI) and it cost $15 or more for a bottle of any of the above.

The last time we went to Mexico for a week, I brought 3 swimsuits, 2-3 cover-ups, 3 sun dresses, a couple tanks, athletic shorts for our excursion day, 4 "nice" outfits to comply with dress code of some of the restaurants and shoes/sandals that could mix and match across the different outfits. I learned my lession from previous trips with my over packing. Days were always in swim attire and/or sun dresses. Nights I wore my regular clothes. And if I remember right, I still took things home that I didn't wear. I also had some light sweaters to wear over the dresses for the night.

Diddo on Jenn's comment on the cups. We brought 52 oz Bubba Kegs and it was perfect. The resort cups were 8-10 oz. tops. No one ever questioned our kegs and they were filled with whatever we wanted. Smiley smile

You might want to pack just one pair of jeans, just in case one day it happens to be cold. Its unlikely but it could happen, and you dont want to be freezing your ass off in a sundress.

Im packing six pairs of jeans/skirts, six tshirts, six sets of undies, six sets of lingerie-ish outfits, twelve towels, flipflops, dressy sandals, walking shoes, shampoo, conditioner, soap, feminine cleanser, aspirin, first aid kit, hairbrush, sunblock, solarcaine, sunglasses, camera, cell phone charger, our own travel mugs, some cds, dvds, some ky jelly and a 12 pack of trojans. I dont think we will need anything else.

Oh, and im also packing two swimsuits, two coverups, and a couple of beach towels.

@jenn, that is SUCH a great tip about the cups! i was so jealous of the couple in the pool with matching insulated "bride" and "groom" cups. i will most definitely bring my own insulated cup or mug next time i got to an AI resort.

i brought 4 bathing suits, a ridiculous amount of cover-ups, and dresses for every night. i also brought shorts and a few t-shirts. those came in handy for the day we went ziplining. also brought close toed shoes for that.

one thing i noticed at the resort is that some women got really dressed up at night, sparkly dresses and stuff. some didn't. i did a little of both. so if you have some fun dresses you've been looking for a reason to wear, it's a great place to do it! also, bring a TON of sunscreen. you'll need it, and they will kill you with the prices to buy it on the resort.

I was wondering if it was worth it to pack my own towels. We did last year. I guess I'll throw this into the mix:

pack extra plastic grocery bags for wet clothing and zip lock bags for room key!

Angel - Do you not reuse them either? They just take up sooo much space!

Most resorts provide plenty of towels. i can't imagine using a new towel every day though if i had to bring my own! that seems insane! even at home i use a towel a few times for showering before i wash it. i just hang it up after and let it dry out.

I agree! The resorts have plenty of towels. There's no need to bring your own.
