Over or Under: 4.5 Hour Reception?

Maren, on September 11, 2018 at 11:05 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 2 124

The average length of a wedding reception - cocktail hour included - is 4-5 hours. Which means there’s plenty of time for eating and dancing! How long will your reception be? Over or under 4.5 hours?

Over. Our reception (including cocktail hour) will be approx. 6 hours ending around midnight. This is pretty average for my area (with many being even longer).

Ours will be about 5ish, depending on how long the ceremony goes. cocktail hour from 6-7, reception from 7-11pm

Under maybe? Right now we are planning for 4 hours but if it goes longer we already have a plan in place with the DJ and vendors.

We are having a longer wedding, mostly because we got lucky with having friends who are professional DJs, photographers, HMUAs, etc. It helps us save a lot of money, plus none of them are putting a strong limit on our hours. So, we’re looking at the reception lasting from 3pm to midnight. Maybe later? We also rented the entire venue for 2 nights, so we don’t have a cutoff there either.

Hi ap2al! That's a great cocktail to reception hour ratio. Will you be serving any special signature drinks or fun appetizers during your cocktail hour? Smiley smile

Hi Kayla! That's great to hear, as it's hard to know how long the party is going to last if everyone is having so much fun, dancing the night away. Smiley heart

We are having a somewhat diff timeline than the norm! We are starting at 3:00 pm with a welcome party which runs until 4:30 with food/whiskey tasting/ open bar/ cigar roller/ acoustic musician. Then at 4:45 everyone is directed over to the ceremony spot. 4:55-5:15 ceremony - guests back over to the welcome area (tented) or the barn which will be open at that point for everyone to find their seats or not.. DJ starts/ intros/ more food served (we have food served for 5 hours, not including dessert or after hours snack).

Over. Cocktail hour from 5-6, reception from 6-11, so 6 hours total. BUT, we are doing last call for alcohol at 10:30 then pushing coffee and water on people who are still around.
