Opposition from boss regarding taking time off for honeymoon

courtney, on June 3, 2011 at 1:38 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 14

I'm getting married in December and my boss has already expressed several times that she doesn't know that she will allow me to take 2 weeks off for my wedding and honeymoon. Did anyone else deal with a situation like this? I've contacted HR and I guess worst case scenario will quit my job but I was under the assumption most management would be understanding with a wedding. Help!

It depends on where you work and what your schedule is like at that point. I know that I've had to deny people vacation before (never a wedding or honeymoon, but vacation none the less) because they either scheduled it during a freeze period (usually around time of a go live of a project) or someone else already had scheduled vacation that day and the coverage was needed at the office. I would try to find out the reasoning why your boss is balking at approving the vacation. I will say that I could never imagine quitting a job over something like this, as much as it would suck to have my honeymoon cut short.

I've had my 6 days off on the calendar for a year now but my manager was recently let go and now (her manager) is in charge of my position. He was aware I was getting married but not privy to my days off so I told him that I have 6 days off and his response was well send me the dates so I can make sure they don't conflict with anyone elses time off.. WTF I don't care if they do I've had this planned out for much longer than anyone else in his department and Yes I will quit over it. Maybe not immediately but I will find a job and walk!!

Can you take time off from work for your honeymoon at a later point in the year? Since I am a teacher and FH is in the military we are limited in when we can get time off. We are getting married in June and will not take a honeymoon until October based on work schedules. There is no rule you need to go away right after the wedding...

WOW that is too bad. I guess it depends on what type of work you do and how much your job depends on you to be there. I'd think your boss would understand with you giving her/him such an advance notice. What if you can get someone to take care of your work while you are gone? Maybe ask WHY they have a problem with it and find the solution? I am blessed. Just started this job in April so I really dont' get any vacation time until October. My wedding is July and my boss is letting me take off the time I need for my honeymoon and wedding preps and I'll just "charge back" the time when my days hit. She's such an awesome boss!

I think it depends a lot on time of year and your job. since you are a december wedding, if its retail or anything else that has a spike in service during christmas, i could understand 2 weeks seemingl ike a lot. maybe try and figure out why she isnt sure or what the hold up is? maybe you could take the few days before the wedding off, but wait a week or two for the honeymoon? thaty way you arent gone 2 weeks straight?

Hopefully you did not already book the honeymoon..IMO it is definitely not smart to quit your job over this..you don't want to start out your marriage with half of the household income if you don't have to (unless of course you really hate your job and FH makes enough money)..In my experience making assumptions about management's understanding about things like weddings is not prudent..if anything you should be more conservative unless you know about their stance for a fact. If anything can you take vacation without pay at least rather than quitting?

Depends on your schedule, did you take that into account when planning your Wedding/Honeymoon? My wedding is after our audit, so I know that I'll have the time available and there will be no immediate need for me to be in the office. However, had I scheduled it in August, I doubt I could get 2 weeks off. As that is full on audit time.

I agree with bluedaisy, try working a week in between

I'm really sorry that your manager isn't being as supportive as they could be. I'm incredibly lucky that I have a manager who worked to get my time off taken care of well in advance. I should remember that. :\

Personally, I think 2 weeks off at any one time is alot to ask from your employer. It will also be in the month of December- when it's not fair to other employees. They wouldn't be able to take time off for the holidays and to visit with their family. Those 2 weeks would end Decemeber 24th- Christmas Eve... Too many other employees want to take a few days off that week- so, it's fair. You can't have them all!

I'd seriously reconsider taking that long off. Why can't you do a 5-6 day honeymoon? Take off the Friday before and the week after. Then, return to work for the week before Christmas so your coworkers can take time off.

Coming from a country where 4 to 6 weeks paid vacation is the norm, this is crazy! When I go home, I always go for 2 weeks. It's a very American tradition to not take vacation for more than a week or so and it sucks (but I guess that's why you are a superpower and we're ...errr..not Smiley smile I would be very upset about it, but I wouldn't quit my job unless I hated my job and we would be ok financially.

I can tell you I would not be allowed to take 2 weeks off right before Christmas at my retail job. we actually have a freeze out period that no one can take leave between thanksgiving and Christmas. Though i have gotten away with taking (un paid!) vacation starting Christmas until new years. I understand that you want to go on your honeymoon right away, and i don't know what type of job you have, but if it is the type where others would have to cover your shift for you and therefor not be able to take any time off themselves it wouldn't be fair for you to get 2 weeks and them none. Even if it is your wedding.

Thank you so much for all your comments. Sorry I am so behind in replying.

The bottom line is that before I accepted my position I informed my potential manager that I had just gotten engaged and would be getting married on 10 December. I work for Lockheed Martin as a financial analyst and have been with the company for 5 years. I transfered into this new position at the end of February. My wedding does not interfere with any freeze periods or would cause any sort of impact on my coworkers. I'm the only person on my team that works in the office every day of the week. Everyone else works remotely from home.

I have spoken to Human Resources and am prepared to fight this. I should have given some more background information but my boss once tried to deny a coworker from taking their entire 6 week maternity leave. I think that speaks volumes as to what type of a person I'm dealing with!!!

I have asked if I could take vacation without pay, work overtime and bank it to use in December, etc. and all have been shot down.

I am sure quitting my job over this might sound a bit much to some of you however my fiance is active duty Army and has been stationed overseas for two years now. I will need to apply for a transfer due to the fact that he will not be working in the DC area like we have been planning. So I might just time it perfectly to where I get to tell my boss that I'm quitting because I have something else lined up!
