Opinion on French macarons as favors?

Natalie, on August 23, 2018 at 10:55 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 28

Hi everyone! I'm on the fence about leaving a favor for our guests, since I know a lot of the time they get forgotten and left behind. If we do a favor, we want it to be edible so at least it won't go to waste and somehow they'll get eaten (rather than a coozie, chapstick, etc. that might not get used). I also think something handmade is more special. I'm an amateur baker and everyone knows it's my passion, so I thought French macarons (not the coconut ones!) would be appropriate! I had the idea to give each guest a cute little clear box (tied with a bow and tag "thanks for joining us" or something) with 2-3 macarons each - which would be made from scratch by me.

Am I crazy to think I can make 2-3 macarons per guest?? We're inviting around 100 people. I would definitely make them weeks in advance and freeze them until we need to assemble the boxes. Baking them and assembling them is right up my alley - I love doing that kind of stuff and wouldn't mind the time-consuming part of it as long as I plan appropriately.

Just wanted to get your feedback if it's worth the effort and cost. Almond flour is expensive - I should probably figure out how much I would need and what the cost would be. Perhaps a local baker would be able to make them for less. Now I'm just talking out loud haha but I would love to hear what you think!!

Honestly, you could probably do 1 per guest, unless you are feeling up to making more or if the box would look empty with 1! You could even wrap them in clear cellophane and tie a ribbon around one.

Yes id do one per guest maybe make them on the larger side. Also if baking is relaxing to you it might help with wedding stress.. great idea though. im craving one now lol

One in cellophane with a ribbon would drastically cut down on effort and time haha I like that idea - thank you!

If you love to bake, just make regular cookies. Also easily done in advance. I wouldn't go to the effort of macarons. Have you ever made them? Not the easiest cookie to make!

Omg I could do jumbo macarons Smiley xd Yeah, one per guest would be so much more reasonable. It's definitely enjoyable for me, although I'm still perfecting the macaron technique - lots of screw ups for FH to eat haha!

I personally love macarons and would love them as a favor! I think it would be extra special if you made them but you might want to save yourself the work and stress and let someone else do them.

Cookies would be cute wrapped up with a ribbon as well! I have made them and still working on perfecting the technique - I just love how pretty and elegant they look.

I'll have to get pricing from some bakers around here. I know it sounds silly, but once I hear a quote (like $200 for 100 macarons or something) I'm like "nah I'd rather do it" even if it costs me the same in supplies haha

As a Baker and a DIYer, i dont think your guests will appreciate the different in effort between a macaron and choc chip cookies.

I had thought of doing this too! However my macaron technique is also not perfected yet, so instead I made about 450 cookie dough balls (which really only took 2 days to do) and have been freezing them as I go. I bought some self-seal plastic bags from Amazon (they were $25 for 200 bags) and made cute stickers to put on the outside of the bags (labels were 300 for $8). The labels are on the bags, ready to go, and now all I have to do is pop the cookies in the oven next week, bag them and seal and they'll be good to go for Friday. Knowing what I know now about the planning process, there are SO many things to think about and do at the end and my next week is already booked solid pretty much, so I'm really glad I went this route instead of something more intricate. I'm also really glad I'm using bags and labels instead of anything with ribbon because that's super time consuming, and favors are 1 per person, so I'm glad I'm not putting ribbon around 150 bags/boxes and cutting out that many tags as well!

I also chose to do "gourmet" cookies, so there's a bunch with chocolate chips and sprinkles, others have white chocolate chips and caramel, some have chocolate and M&Ms and potato chips, so you can definitely get creative there too!

Love, love, love this! You and I sound similar in how we organize Smiley smile You're right - the bag and label idea is much more efficient and easier on the fingers than tying tiny bows! Every little detail makes a difference, whether positive or negative haha

I love french macarons so I would be extremely happy about that. Have you made macarons before? I would definitely do a few trial runs prior because I hear they are hard to make.

I have! I'm definitely no professional, but I like the challenge and being able to play around with so many flavors and colors. That's what's great about macarons - glad to hear you'd like them as a favor Smiley smile

I love macarons and would be so happy to get a homemade one as a guest! I say if you're up for the work that's involved and like to bake, then go for it!

I love the idea of cookies....but macaroons is a huge project! I agree....chocolate chip would probably be just as big of a hit and way less time consuming/expensive to make.

    Now I want cookies.....

I absolutely love macarons, but I'd be worried about making SO many. I made some for a friends birthday and to only make about 20, it took me a while. And yes the almond flour was very expensive! However-- if I heard someone hand made macarons as a favor, I would be incredibly impressed. As long as you don't think it'll overwhelm you, I'd go for it!

I would check on the cost like you mentioned but... I love this idea! For me, I love baking. It makes me happy and calm. I was going to make the dessert for our dessert bar (which we aren't doing anymore) and now I am still planning to make a couple cakes that week as gifts to family and my Fiance. Someone questioned me and having time... my response: It will probably be a relief and calming and something I would welcome the week of my wedding.

I love baking as well and would enjoy spending the time doing it, as long as I made sure I'd have enough time! I thought about making some desserts for our dessert bar as well - there's nothing better than sharing sweets you made with loved ones.

Sally’s Baking Addiction has a wonderful tutorial on making French macarons! I have made them a few times using her recipe and they always come out great! 😁 I absolutely love the idea of macarons as favors!

If you're willing to put the effort in, I think it's a sweet idea. Just be mindful of your time and stress!

Also, do any of your guests have nut allergies?
