One Year Already!

My husband and I are celebrating our one year wedding anniversary today! I can't believe it's already been a year since we said "I do"!

One Year Already! 1
One Year Already! 2

We started this morning with coffee made from the last bag of coffee beans that we bought on the Costa Rica portion of our honeymoon:

One Year Already! 3

For an anniversary gift (year 1 = paper), I gave him two mini paintings! When we were on the Hawaii portion of our honeymoon, we met a local artist who specializes in mini paintings and also hand-painted jewelry, and my husband purchased a necklace for me. Once we got back from our honeymoon, I reached out to her on social media to commission two mini paintings: one based on the Hawaiian leg of our honeymoon, and one based on the Costa Rican leg of our honeymoon. I gave her a list of things we did (along with stories from each adventure), and pictures from our trip for her to use as inspiration. I gave her free reign to paint whatever inspired her from our honeymoon.

For the Hawaiian painting, she incorporated the trees that my husband loves, a rainbow to represent the rainbow we saw on our first night there, the view from our oceanfront hotel room, and the sea turtle that was swimming below us while we were surfing.

One Year Already! 4

The Costa Rican painting was based on our favorite part of the resort: the monkeys!!!

One Year Already! 5

For his anniversary gift to me, my husband had purchased a spray paint painting from an artist on a trip to Vegas earlier this year.

One Year Already! 6

We went to lunch today at our venue's restaurant - just like on our wedding day, the weather again was absolutely perfect!

One Year Already! 7

As part of our wedding ceremony last year, we did a whiskey blending ceremony, and we intended to enjoy the blend on our first anniversary. However, we unfortunately lost the contents of the barrel shortly after our wedding when the barrel started leaking, so we saved our favorite whiskey bottles for us to open today. We plan to mix a couple of them tonight after dinner, and enjoy them over the next few weeks.

How are you all planning to celebrate your first wedding anniversary? Will you be going on a trip somewhere? Making dinner reservations at your favorite restaurant? Doing a date night at home?

We planned another cruise for May 2024. This time we'll start in Athens, then head to Santorini, Mykanos, Ephres (Turkey), then back up our honeymoon trek along the Italian coastline. Sigh. Can't wait.

You got engaged on a cruise, right? A cruise sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate your anniversary! And wow - those locations sound amazing! Will that be your first time visiting those places? Or have you been there before?

Our honeymoon (this June) was a 9 day French Riviera cruise starting in Barcelona and down the coast ending in Rome. We added days before and after for a full 2 weeks in Europe. When we saw we could check off Greece on our bucket list and return to Italy, we grabbed the opportunity. Absolutely fell in love with Tuscany. One Year Already! 8

We are not doing our honeymoon till our one year anniversary. I know I’m gonna be sad after the wedding day as I’ve spent a lot of time planning for the wedding day. This way I’ll have something to plan and look forward to after the wedding. Congrats on one year! That first year can be tough. I love the thoughtful touches you two had for your anniversary

That's a great way to combat the post wedding blues! Giving yourself something else to and look forward to will take your mind off of missing the fun parts of wedding planning. Have you discussed possible honeymoon locations yet? Or waiting until after the wedding before you start thinking about honeymoon ideas?

Happy 1 year!! I love that you both brought in themes and memories from the big day so you could relive a little portion of your wedding. Do you plan to do something like this on every anniversary, or just the big milestone ones?
I know we didn’t end up getting legally married at our wedding, but we still plan to celebrate the anniversary this year. We are getting legally married at the courthouse on Halloween, then getting Halloween tattoos on 11.11 (our original wedding date) to tie the 2 events together.

Thank you!! We were intentional this year about incorporating memories from our wedding and honeymoon into our anniversary, but it's still undecided on whether we'll continue that tradition going forward or not. One of the things we did decide on was that my husband plans our anniversary for odd numbered years, and I plan our anniversary on the even numbered years, so how we celebrate will be up to whoever is planning that particular year. I think we'll probably make it a tradition to visit our venue's restaurant for lunch sometime around our anniversary each year, but otherwise, not sure yet how anniversaries will look in the future. I'm excited to find out though!

You and your fiance have the coolest ideas on making your celebrations unique and centered around important traditions in your relationship! It's been so fun to hear about your wedding plans and how they evolved over time. A Halloween ceremony is a fun idea! Will you be incorporating Halloween into your ceremony? I love the idea of tying in your original date with your new date (the tattoos are a great way to do that!), and I also love the idea of celebrating the anniversary of your New Orleans wedding. Do you plan to celebrate both anniversaries each year going forward?

Thank you!! I purchased the paintings back in October/November, and it was SO DIFFICULT to keep them a secret from my husband until our anniversary. I love the painting that he bought too, I'm so impressed that it was made using only spray paint! There are definitely some very talented artists out there. Cheers!

Thank you! We are definitely not a traditional couple, so we try to find ways to celebrate that are fun and romantic, but still "us". We aren't really planning to incorporate Halloween in our ceremony, but it will definitely be a part of the day as a whole! We are taking my fiance's son and our dogs trick or treating after our ceremony (one of my favorite things to do!), then going to a Halloween party at a local bar (sans the child and dogs, of course LOL). I am also incorporating touches of the milestones in our relationship. I am going to modify the black ceremony dress I wore in New Orleans for the courthouse ceremony. And since it will likely be chilly outside, I am going to wear a leather jacket I wore in some of our engagement photos. For shoes, I think I am going to wear the Dr. Martens I was wearing on our first date. And for jewelry, a ring he gifted me for an anniversary. It took a loooooong time to finally get here, and we went through so much during the journey, so I really love the idea of incorporating little pieces of that journey when we finally make it legal. We don't plan on celebrating both anniversaries though - just the NOLA date, since that is also our dating anniversary. We would have liked to get married this year on the same date, but courthouses in small towns are all closed for Veteran's Day. So we chose Halloween because it's my favorite, and we knew if it was on a special date, we wouldn't forget it 😂

I love the idea of taking turns planning your anniversaries!! I'm totally stealing that!! LOL

Totally a bummer that the courthouse will be closed on your dating anniversary, but Halloween is a super fun alternative! What modifications are you making to your dress? I love how you will be incorporating pieces from every part of your journey into your courthouse ceremony - I feel like that will really tie the whole adventure together!

Yeah, I was pretty bummed about the date also. We talked about going into Chicago to do it instead, but I really just didn’t want the hassle or to leave our dogs. We don’t mind the date too much though because we had actually contemplated getting married on Halloween initially, but decided against it for simplicity of only having to remember one anniversary date, and also because I didn’t like the idea of sharing my favorite holiday with another event 😂 But since we are going to celebrate our initial date anyway, it’s not really an issue.
For my dress, I am going to wear the satin ceremony dress from NOLA. The big dramatic skirt is removable, so I won’t be wearing it. And we are going to shorten the train a little bit, and remove the big avant-garde sleeves. It is going to basically be a black satin version of the dress my mom wore for her wedding. And I am going to wear her veil for the ceremony. I liked the idea of paying homage to her and my dad’s wedding, because they are still happily married and so in love. We hope to have a marriage/relationship just like theirs 💕
