Officiant's hotel room

Samantha, on March 21, 2024 at 10:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 3

My fiance and I are getting married about an hour from where our officiant's work place is, although I think they live further away than that. They mentioned they would love to come to the rehearsal and welcome dinner the night before but would want to look into a hotel room to avoid the long drive back and forth. Should we offer to pay for this? I can understand paying for a hotel room when you're asking an officiant to travel hours or out of state, but I feel like if it's within an hour of the place they work, it's not as expected. What should we do?

What does your contract with the officiant state? Is their attendance at the rehearsal in your contract? Or anything about a travel policy? If your contract only covers services for the wedding day and there's nothing stated about a hotel or travel fees, then I don't think you're obligated to cover the hotel cost. But if you want them to be at both the rehearsal and wedding (instead of just the wedding), and it's within your budget, then it would be a kind gesture to offer to cover the hotel cost too.

An hour away is the long side of a daily commute. A hotel room is completely unnecessary. Don’t spend your money on this.

There is a certain sense of security knowing that your officiant is present and things will start on time. No worries about traffic, weather issues, etc.

We covered the hotel cost for our daughter's officiant and it was worth the peace of mind. The officiant, being there at the start of the day, also touched base with each of them to calm any nerves.
