Hi Kathleen! I'm seeing some mixed answers online, so your best bet is to call the Register of Deeds in the county where you'll be getting married to see what type of documentation your officiant will need to perform the wedding!

Hi Kathleen - were you able to figure out the answer to your question? I'm getting married in NC in November and was wondering the same thing. Thanks!

    Hi Holly,
No! Ive been getting different answers, I reached out to an officiant here and he said that ULC (Universal Life Church Ministry) is not legal here in NC, Not quite sure what to believe. But our plans changed unfortunately, we are getting married at the courthouse instead. Wish you luck!

I have this same question! I'm getting married in Feb. in NC, so I called our county's Register of Deeds. The answer was kind of mixed. She said that online ordained are a grey area, and ULC isn't allowed, I don't think. However, she also said that they don't really check on the officiant either. She said if I wanted to risk it, I could just have the officiant not sign Pastor John Smith of Universal Life Church and just write Pastor John Smith to avoid them making a big deal out of it. Honestly, I don't feel a lot better about this answer, so I'm still not sure what to do, but I thought I'd share what I've found out.

(I'm from a pretty small county where things are clearly not always by the book, lol.)

Yeah, I think my fiance and I are going to do a quick civil ceremony at the courthouse a week before the wedding and then still have our friend officiate our ceremony, even though we'll technically already be married haha.
