nyc bachelorette party

Morgan, on June 18, 2019 at 1:06 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 10
Is it worth it to do a bachelorette party in NYC? I’d love to do something fun with my girls but not have it cost so much.

If you're trying to stick to a budget NYC is very expensive. While you may find an affordable place to stay, food and drinks alone will eat a lot of your money.

We went to NYC for our honeymoon and it was very inexpensive to fly there and stay in a hotel in Times Square but after 6 days we spent about $2,000 on food and drinks, and a broadway show.

If you live near NYC and are planning maybe like one night in a hotel, it might not be too bad! If you don’t live near NYC I’d consider something a bit more cost effective.

Being honest, NYC is EXTREMELY expensive. Even with having a free place to stay with a friend, I've spent hundreds per day there on food and drinks and activities. It's one of the priciest cities in the US. ESPECIALLY if you're wanting entertainment other than bars/clubs, and even the cover charges at those can be high.

What do you want to do?

As a local, I have some advice.

    1. Don't go to chain restaurants. Get off the avenues and away from the tourist-y places, find the hole-in-the-walls, and the more local places, eat there. It'll still probably be expensive in comparison, but you won't be paying NYC prices for not-NYC food.

    2. Don't stay in Times Square. Google maps and the MTA app will help you navigate the city, so feel free to stay farther away from mid and downtown. (Heck, stay in Jersey City, we're across the river, there's a train that goes to the city 24/7, and we have a small but vibrant food scene. We're still expensive, as well, but we're cheaper than NYC.)

    3. Use TKTS, lotteries, and walk-ups to try to get B'way tix. Don't try for Hamilton (yes, I know, we all want to see it, tickets are more than my mortgage payments), go for the classics like Lion King or Book of Mormon or Wicked or something at the Public or an off-B'way theatre. (Or Lincoln Center. Always good stuff there.)

    4. Actually, not to put too fine a point on it - don't even go to B'way. Go to the festivals, the off-off B'way stuff (B'way, off-B'way, and off-off B'way are not an indication of quality, merely an indication of the number of seats in a theatre). You may be seeing the next Hamilton or Wicked.

    5. Look up the tiny museums, the ones that aren't famous. There are SO MANY and they are awesome, and usually fairly affordable.

    6. Explore the other parks. Most parks in NYC were designed by the same guy, or designed to be like they were. There are so many, and all are really cool.

    7. Don't be afraid of the natives. We're in a rush, yes, but if you just ask someone who looks up, they'll be happy to help.

    Hi Morgan!

Really great advice from the previous posters!

How many days would you like to spend in NYC? What sort of activities would you like to do? Would you be willing to stay in an Airbnb as opposed to a hotel?

It would totally be worth figuring this out, and doing up an estimated costing! You can then make an informed decision on whether or not to go ahead with it!

Do you know what you want to do specifically? There are some lounges and bars that have “VIP” packages that are pretty nice. Music and drinks and good crowds. You could get an Airbnb (major money savor) could have a spa day (usually great deals on Groupon) then get dressed and head over to a lounge. It’s doable and can be fun. What kinda scene is most desirable to you?

We went to NYC for my friends bachelorette last year. We did things like the sex museum, Bronx zoo, and a sight seeing tour because that was her first time in NYC. As PP have said it is very expensive so budget for that. We stayed in NJ to cut costs and took the train from Seacaucus to Penn each day (a round trip ticket was only $8)

Are you nearby? I am about an hour and a half away from NYC and it is the central spot for all my ladies so that’s where we ended up for my bachelorette!

We had a delicious meal in Little Italy and went to a 90s theme show/party! We didn’t make it to brunch the next day but that was also in the plan! I definitely recommend A good NYC brunch if you’ve never done it before!
