NWR: What are your favorite books?!

rose, on September 20, 2017 at 6:21 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 37

So I started re-reading (for like the fifth time) Anne Rices Vampire Chronicles, they've been my favorite since I was 12. I was tempted to read IT, saw the new movie in theaters and it's the only movie I actually considered walking out of! lol so what are your favorite books? Any suggestions for new books I can try?

I absolutely loved the Rock Chick series of books for mindless entertainment. It's basically a series of badass females facing huge catastrophes and hooping up with badass PIs. The series is written by Kristen Ashley

If you like vampires check out the Black Dagger Brotherhood series (start with Wrath & Beth) by JR Ward.

You might also enjoy the Anita Blake Vampire series by Laurel K Hamilton but the sex can get pretty raunchy

I love the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong it has 13 books that are all intertwined and here are werewolves, vampires, witches and such. More recently I'm obsessed with her Cainsville series which is a very modern style fairy tale book that's also sort of a mystery, it's very hard to decribe. Soulless by Gail Carriger is really good if you like steampunk. And if you like Modern fairy tale type books the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire is also amazing.

I know this is sort of typical, but I grew up on the Song of Ice and Fire series, long before it became a TV show (Game of Thrones). It has a special place in my heart. Right now I'm reading The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and it's the best book I've read in a while! I also recently read this book called Uprooted by Naomi Novik. These are all sci-fi and fantasy recommendations, if you're into those genres!

Anything by John Grisham. I recently discovered Scott Cross on Amazon who has a series of books similar to John Grisham (and very cheap!!) for anyone who loves law-thrillers!

So my nerdiness comes out with harry potter and lord of the rings lol.

But I also love anything dealing with history or historical fiction. Recently just read The True Story of Hansel and Gretel. It was really good.

Also anything by dean koontz, stephen king, dan brown. I will read just about anything!

I have been reading the Liane Moriarty books lately and LOVE them all. Especially What Alice Forgot, the Husband's Secret, and the Last Anniversary.

You probably have heard of her through Big Little Lies (which is also excellent)

Phillipa Gregory turns a great historical fiction. I love her! And the Lunar chronicles series are great twisted fairytales. Cindrella is a cyborg who loses her mechanical foot.

I am in a murder/suspense phase and I usually just browse Amazon for something that sounds good.

I recently read Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine and enjoyed it. It is about a woman who finds out her husband is a serial killer from a freak accident and her trying to start her life over.

Anything by David Rakoff; hilarious, articulate, beautifully written essays on everything from the Miss Universe Pagent to the Concord to Gruman's Chinese Theatre.

Anything by Anne Lamott, but her non fiction is best (Traveling Mercies and Bird by Bird, which is a book on writing that is killer)

The Outlander Series is my all time fav. I used to really like Joanna Lyndsey's regency era romances about the Mallory family. The books can be read independently but its better if they are in order because they are all intertwined. There's a good bit of humor in them usually as the family is a bit eccentric. I also love Shakespeare's plays, the word play is so much fun!

I'm reading GoT right now and it's a pretty wonderful series. I've never seen the show! One of my favorites is The House at the Edge of Night by Catherine Banner.

@Felicia I listened to The Art of Racing in the Rain- Garth Stein on audiobook. I had to pull my car over because I was crying so hard at one point. I thought the The Nightingale- Kristin Hannah was so beautiful written.

@Kelly - Love David Baldacci. I love his Will Robie character. I am also waiting at the library for The Fix.

The best book I have read all year has been When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi.
