Northern Lights Honeymoon in Alaska

LittleDemon, on September 7, 2016 at 4:53 PM Posted in Honeymoon 1 16

Hey all! My fiance and I are considering doing a 6 day tour in Fairbanks/Anchorage focused on seeing the Northern Lights as much as possible. Has anyone ever done anything like this trip? We're looking to go the week after our wedding.

Edit: Company/Trip we are planning on using

Nope but sounds like lots of fun! If you're into cold locations and Northern Lights, check out Iceland!

It's actually not expensive during the winter months and I hear it's a beautiful, must-see, country.

From what i remember, the Northern Lights are not every night. You might want to research a little to check on that. I had a family friend who wanted to see them and they weren't visible when they were in Alaska.

The trip we're looking to do is through a tour company and our 6 days are planned out for us, so even if we don't end up seeing the Northern Lights, there will still be a lot of fun and memorable things to do!

I was going to suggest iceland as well. They also get great "sky shows" and it's a super cool place in general

I don't understand posting the exact same link twice, unless you're advertising for them....

Sorry I realized after I posted that comment that I should just put it in the initial post.

That seems like an awesome honeymoon! We wanted to go to Alaska but we're getting married too late in the year.

I haven't done a trip like this, but my FSIL is a nature photographer in Alaska. Northern Lights aren't every night. They are a result of magnetic storms on the surface of the sun. They are more common certain times of the year, and can be predicted several weeks in advance. I've seen really faint lights in NC during highly active storms.

Depending on where you live, Iceland may actually be closer, though I'd recommend Norway and Sweden over Iceland. I think what you have planned sounds great.

Awesome!! I'll be living up there next year! Good luck on the Aurora chase! :-D

Tip: drinks lots of water before bed...you'll likely have to get up in the middle of the night when they make their appearance. ;-)

We live in Colorado and I don't actually have a passport (not saying that they're hard to get, I just don't really want one). And both the fiance and I have always wanted to go to Alaska, so we think it fits. Also I made us matching nerdy scarves, his is Star Wars themed and mine is The Hobbit themed so going somewhere that we can wear them is a bonus!

I haven't but Alaska sounds perfect! It's one of my must-go places. The Northern Lights would be beautiful - I've heard about them from older friends. And depending on what temperature you're used to it would be the perfect honeymoon to go see and do things and come back home to cuddle up for warmth! Smiley smile

I live in Alaska and I can tell you the Salmonberry is very reputable. We have actually been super lucky to see the Lights early this year, the last couple weeks. The time that you are planning to go is ideal as it will be cold and if it is clear (that is the tricky part) you will most likely see the lights, but it is never a sure thing.

Feel free to email me if you have any other Alaska related questions.
