No Mc? Just a Dj?

Jana, on May 6, 2020 at 7:58 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

As a guest, would you be utterly lost and confused if there were no announcements made by the dj?

Guests can usually figure out who the bride and groom are, when things are happening (dinner being served, dancing starting based on music played, etc) and so on. As a guest at weddings/anniversaries I've attended where there was a dj, nothing was really announced at any point and guests were able to stay on the dance floor, figure out when dinner/appetizers were served, etc. Would this absolutely confuse the crap out of you to not have every single action announced or is an MC vital to your guests enjoying themselves and knowing what is going on when instead of going with the flow?

I think having a MC helps with the flow of things and keeps everything organized. For our wedding we had two DJs and one was also the MC. All of the DJs I spoke with while researching included a MC along with a DJ. I haven't ever been to a wedding without a MC.

Having the MC is mostly important for announcing things like the first dance, mother/son and father/daughter dances. Also generation dance, dollar dance or any other kind of dance you will have.

We would just have a first dance out of all of those. Then free for all afterward.

Can your dj announce things? Usually I think people can infer what’s happening but it would be nicer to have it announced

Yes most djs I've seen online offer that as part of their duties. I'm curious how necessary it really is. I've never seen announcements for various events at a wedding as a guest and no one had any issues with missing them or being unaware. But that's my personal experience in the past.

It's not that I'd be confused, just perhaps a little frustrated or worried that things could get missed. Also, it's nice to hear names - figure out who the bride's parents are, if anyone is changing names...

A good DJ doesn't talk all the time, just gently guides people throughout the night.

I went to a friend’s wedding who didn’t have an MC, just a DJ who announced them coming in. I missed the cake cutting ceremony because of this. So in my opinion, I’d rather have one to announce those things than not have one and have people miss things they may not have wanted to miss.

I feel like at the very least you would want a coordinator. Someone who can direct guests on what and where they need to be. Do they need to start sitting for the ceremony? Is everyone standing up and enjoying cocktails and now needs to move to their tables so that dinner can be served? If you’re having a buffet, what tables should go stand in line, which ones should wait their turn, etc.

It seems very self explanatory, but I did go to a wedding where there was absolutely no direction and it was actually chaos. No one knew what was happening or what to do.
