New Zealand or Greece?

Lauren, on March 22, 2018 at 3:28 AM Posted in Honeymoon 2 6

My fiancé and I aren't huge lay on the beach all day type people so we wanted to do something different. We also love cruises so we wanted to incorporate that. We are getting married October 27th, so our honeymoon would be early November. We found a cruise the leaves from Sydney, Australia and goes around New Zealand, we would spend a couple days exploring Sydney and then hop on the boat for a 12 day cruise through New Zealand. We also found a cruise that leaves from Venice, Italy and goes around Greece. We would spend a few days in Italy before getting on the boat for a 7 day cruise around Greece. We have never been to either place and its going to cost about the same price so I wanted to get some opinions.

I cannot speak on New Zealand, but I can definitely speak on Greece. I've visited Greece every summer for the past 20 years. I am biased in that I have all my family there, but I truly and absolutely love Greece. I would not continue going if I didn't love it so much! In fact, I'm getting married there in July.

In early November, Greece starts to get chillier. It's not the iconic hot and dry atmosphere at that time. I think the best time to go to Greece is anytime between early June and early October. With that being said, New Zealand maybe a better suited destination for that time of the year.

If you went in November, you wouldn't be able to take advantage of the beaches, but it doesn't sound like you're much of a beach-goer. You could take advantage of the historical sites, museums, and cuisine, but you'd be limited beyond that in Greece.

What islands would you be stopping at?

Obviously, the most common and popular ones are Mykonos and Santorini. They are tourist-packed, however, and can get overwhelming but if you go before or after the peak season (late June to early September), you can avoid most of the crowds.

Each Greek island offers something different but there's a common theme - culture, variety of beaches, awesome cuisine, and hospitable locals. Mostly everyone speaks English, so you'd have no problem there.

If you need help with anything specific, please let me know! I've always wanted to visit New Zealand and I'm sure it would be amazing.

It’s one of my life goals to go to New Zealand. I’d totally pick there, but I never found Greece that appealing.

I can't speak on Greece, but my husband and I recently got back from our honeymoon in New Zealand and it was the best thing I've ever done. Granted we didn't do a cruise and did a TON of excursions on our own and stayed in AirBnB's, which was one of my favorite parts.

One thing I will say though is that NZ/AUS seasons are opposite of ours. We got married in September, when it's still cold and wintery in NZ, so we pushed the honeymoon off until end of Jan/Feb when it was prime summer time. We wanted to do water and hiking activities and didn't want to travel with bulky winter gear. November in NZ is very early spring, and still pretty cold!

I've been to both. They are both beautiful in very different ways. You will probably have nicer weather in New Zealand that time of year because it will be their spring. I think it depends on the types of activities you like to do. New Zealand would be better of you are more outdoor adventure people. They have bungee jumping, Maori villages, glow worm caves, penguins, zorbing, sky diving, if you are into Lord of the Rings, you can see the Hobbit village.

Greece has amazing food, really cool history, museums, art and architecture. If you are more into those things, I would go with Greece.

Both are definitely worth it in their own way.

New Zealand is a beautiful place, I'm perhaps biased because I am from there 😉. October is a good time to visit there weather wise. I really want to go to Greece someday. Are the two cruises the same length?

Hello Kelsey! I know you wrote this post in 2017 so long shot that you are still on these forums but I was wondering if you could share some of the info from your excursions / BNB's from your honeymoon to New Zealand. My fiance and I are looking to go there for our honeymoon in 2021 and any advice or tips help. Thank you so much for sharing!
