New Orleans recommendations needed!!!

Chrysta, on July 19, 2019 at 9:59 AM Posted in Louisiana Planning 0 4
We are having a destination wedding in the French quarter, New Orleans. We are doing a cocktail hour immediately following the ceremony while the FH and I have pictures taken. We will then be having a traditional sit down plated dinner. We will be having an open bar for all of our guests throughout cocktail hour and dinner (3 hrs total). They will be playing music during the reception, but we will not have a dance floor, DJ, etc. I figured, why waste money on creating a “ party atmosphere “ when New Orleans IS a party! My question is... what are the best bars to take my guests to after dinner?? Definitely looking for very lively places with great music (live, DJ, sound system... doesn’t matter) where people can get up and dance and celebrate and have a great time!! I have heard there are certain places in the French Quarter that are not especially safe, and want to make sure we don’t unintentionally lead our guests into one of these establishments. Any locals with suggestions??

Hey Chrysta! Your wedding sounds like so much fun!! Have you been to New Orleans before? It’s such an amazing city, you are going to have so much fun!!

Have you checked out the Ideas section of the site? There are some great resources there! I think this article would be super helpful for you as you plan your wedding - Getting Married in New Orleans: Your Guide to the Crescent City

With regards to the best bars, you could definitely check out these two articles for some lively suggestions -

It might also be a good idea to inquire with the concierge at the hotel you are staying at! They will have great local knowledge and be able to suggest some bars close by with a great atmosphere!

Ok do go to the French Quarter, any bars/clubs will be fine!! There is a corner store on Bourbon and Canal that I would stay away from! I can't think of the name but just don't go there, it's pretty sketchy!! The Beach on Bourbon is fun!! Razoos is fun!! Y'all have to go to Tropical Isle and get a hand granade!! All the bars and clubs should be safe, don't wander down an alley by yourself but otherwise, y'all shouldn't have any issues!! Now there is street hustlers that will ask you for money and try to "make bets" with y'all. Most will try to bet you they know where you got your shoes from. If this happens, just keep walking and say your local!! Make sure you don't get pressured into giving these people money!! Watch your purse/wallers. Matter of fact, don't bring a purse at all. They're are definitely professional theives out there!! But if you keep walking, say your local and pay attention to your surroundings, your fine and will have a blast!!

Thank you so much for the tips!! I want my guests to have a wonderful time, and make sure each of them feels comfortable and safe. We had originally planned on a very small intimate wedding, but I have a very large family and the guest list is quickly growing. With this many people, there is no way we will all be able to stick together/keep track of one another. I think we are going to put together a welcome bag for each of their rooms. I will make sure to include the tips you have suggested!! I can’t seem to find any specific names of bars, etc. to go to, so I am thinking we may have to fly down there for a weekend on a recon mission! Lol I am not going to plan every detail of every day, but I definitely want a plan set in place for the night of the wedding (ie, exactly what bars we will be going to after the reception)

If you can afford a rekon trip, go for it!! Y'all will have so much fun!! And it's a nice to have an idea of what to expect!! I definitely recommend for you and your guests to visit Jackson Square and the French Market, they are both day time sites. Jackson Square is a big outside area in the Quarter with live statue people, local artists, paintings, blown glass, horse and carriage rides. The Market is an outside market with hundreds of souvenir booths, homade art, jewlery, it's awesome!! Definitely a must do!! Y'all have to go to Cafe Du Minds and get beingets and coffee!! A down south Louisiana tradition!! As far as night life, Fat Cats, Razoos, Beach on Bourbon, Oz (it's a gay club but super fun) Oh and the 700 block of Bourbon is the where all the gay clubs are, I love it down there, but some may not be as open. You will notice all the rainbow flags hanging everywhere so if someone has an issue with it, or it makes them uncomfortable, just tell them to turn around!! Also, be prepared to step through, trash, piss, ish, and vomit. I'm being serious!! It is going to be on the street, just try to watch your step!! Also, the cops ride horses so there will definitely be huge piles of horse ish in the street!! Don't wear heels!! This is a huge mistake made by thousands!! It's not worth it, you will be doing so much walking, wearing heels and carrying a purse, are the 2 biggest mistakes you can make when going to the French Quarter!! It will be amazing, please don't let my warrnings frighten you, or discourage you from visiting. I just thought better to let you know now, than it be a surprise!! If you have any questions feel free to message me!!
