Need Help with Trip Ideas!

SandyZV, on January 17, 2023 at 1:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Good Afternoon Brides!

I am not a bride but I figured this may be a great place to get some ideas. My H and I will be celebrating our 30th (YIKES!) anniversary next year and I have been thinking of trip ideas. The biggest problem that I have is My H is afraid of flying- Strike that he is "afraid of crashing" as he puts it. He hadn't flown since 2005 until recently and it was just a short trip, but alcohol and meds were needed to get through that. (Rolling eyes) Seriously I found an awesome deal for 10 days in Bali with airfare for less than $5,000 for both of us and he immediately said "NOPE".

We love cruising, and have been on several, but I was thinking of something different for this huge milestone - I think everyone is shocked we are still married. We ran off at 18 and 19 after only dating for 6 months and got married. Many challenges and lots of perseverance later, here we are. H says "we are just in the longest game of chicken ever". Smiley smile

We have lived in Hawaii, not too keen on ever returning. Have been to Egypt and Greece-Plane ride is too long now. Caribbean-been to several times, just want something different.

Any suggestions or ideas will be extremely welcome, and I thank you in advance.

Where are you located? It's difficult to determine where you could go without a long flight without knowing that (this is an international forum).

As a side note, perhaps your H would benefit from talking to someone about his fear of flying, since you don't seem overly sympathetic.

You could do a road trip throughout part of the US! For example, you could drive the coast of California, stopping for a day or two at various cities and seeing the sights. Or you could do 10 days in Alaska or even an Alaskan cruise. Or pick a few national parks and plan to spend a few days at each one. Congratulations on your upcoming 30th wedding anniversary!

Wow-that was a pretty brash judgment, I am sympathetic to his fear of crashing. I am not going to respond to that.

We are in the South in the US.

Thank you! I think with all the driving we have done in the past 14 years to get to places long road trips are out of the question. We live in the South now, but I am from Colorado and my family is from NY so we have frequented those areas a great deal. Thank you for the suggestion, will mull over the Alaskan cruise idea!

That makes sense! I suggested a road trip to help avoid flights for your husband's fear of flying. If flights aren't a deal breaker, Costa Rica or Puerto Rico are both great places for a trip! Both offer beaches, adventure (zip lining, hiking, etc), and fun restaurants and places to visit. Costa Rica has a couple all-inclusive resorts, and amazing wildlife to see around the country. Puerto Rico has the historical forts, and Old San Juan is incredible to walk through! Both locations should be a shorter flight from southern US.

I completely forgot about Costa Rica! I will add that to the research items! We had a stop in San Juan on our last cruise and by far that was our favorite port, it would be nice to spend more than 7 hours there.

Is there an estimated length of time he could handle flying? Not sure where in the South you guys are, but Delta is based out of Atlanta and has direct flights to plenty of places. It's not the cheapest cost, but if it's a comfort > price thing, that could help.

Could you perhaps break up the trip into smaller mini trips? My ex was horribly afraid of flying, so we would make the trip multiple stops so that flights would only be a couple hours long. For example, flying from Georgia to Louisiana (spending a day or 2 there), then flying from Louisiana to Texas (spending a few days there), then flying from Texas to California (and spending a few days there).
Or, if you are looking to leave the US, you could drive or take a short flight to the southernmost coast then take a flight to the Caribbean, Mexico, Belize, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands.

We recently took about a 2.5 hour flight and he was OK, with the help. I may look into a short flight to get to a bigger airport. Thank you!

This is a great idea to break it up to get somewhere. It will give us a longer vacay too!

Puerto Rico could also be a good one considering the island is so small- you can rent a car and drive coast to coast in about 2.5 hours, plus there are cruises there to other smaller islands. Lots to see and do there. Just be wary of hurricane season.
