Name Etiquette?

Hannah, on November 27, 2020 at 9:24 PM Posted in Married Life 0 9
Hey all,

I want to make my SIL a personalized ornament with a wedding photo from their small covid backyard wedding this summer, and I currently have "The Jones Smiths" on it. However, they each added the other's last name at the end of their own so I don't know what would technically be correct. So SIL is Jones Smith and her wife is Smith Jones. I don't have the space to have "Jones Smith and Smith Jones."

How about just using their 1st names to keep it simple?

I have "The Jones Smiths" at the top of the photo and "Established 'wedding date'" so I feel like that wouldn't work as well with their 1st names.

I’m thinking that SIL’s name is right. If her family was doing it then it would be The Smith Jones. Btw- that’s a fabulous idea! My daughter just got married a few weeks ago & she’s changing her last name to her wife’s. I have a beautiful pic that would be perfect- where did you get yours?

I would put them in the order of your SIL’s name since that’s who you have the closer relationship to. I think it’s very sweet that you cared enough to consider this. ❤️

I haven't ordered it yet cuz I'm still trying to figure out the name thing, but I have it designed on Shutterfly. I'm also looking at Etsy but haven't found any I was crazy about there yet.

Thank you! That's what I was thinking but then I kinda hesitated cuz I was like "....wait, that isn't technically both of their names" and I couldn't find any proper etiquette online for this.

It’s rather unconventional, but could you put the name as “Jones Smith Jones?” There may not be any etiquette around the issue, but this method would at least recognize both of their new last names, and they would understand the thought behind it. Just a thought.

Could you just ask her in a way that doesn’t give your gift away? Like, “hey I realized that I need to update your address in my address book (or I need it to send out Christmas cards) and I was wondering if you and (wife) have discussed how you would like people to address the family unit on envelopes etc?”
