What agency are you talking about? The Social Security Administration? I would call your local office (whenever you will be mailing your paperwork) to confirm exactly what they need. I only needed to send in my Marriage Abstract. Right or wrong, I’ve heard it can vary by office.

I sent in my marriage certificate and my passport. I sent them through certified mail and they were returned to me quickly (about 2 weeks).

However, others have said that they only needed to send in their original marriage certificate. I would call your local office to see what they’re requiring so you don’t meet any issues.

For my SS app I only had to send the marriage certificate because it was a “long” or “short” form. (I can’t remember which).


If it had been the other type of form, I would have had to include other ORIGINAL documents.
