Name Change

Sarah, on June 29, 2020 at 6:21 PM Posted in Michigan Planning 0 4

I got legally married on March 21, 2020. I had been hoping the social security offices would open up prior to now so that I could change my name in person. However, they still are not saying when they will open up and I think I just need to bite the bullet and send my stuff in the mail. Has anyone in Michigan sent in just their marriage license with the gold stamp and application and been fine? I do not have a passport and they say to send in your ID but that doesn't seem safe and I will not be able to drive for however long they have it. My marriage license has my DOB on it. Has anyone had luck in MI with just the license? More specifically, through the Battle Creek office?

I'm not in Michigan, I'm in TN but I was still able to call the local office and talk to someone. They told me all I needed to send in was my original marriage certificate and the application. My marriage certificate had my DOB too so they didn't need my ID. I got everything back and got my new card in a little over a week. I'd try calling the local office if you haven't already and see what they say.

Hi Sarah! I've seen a few other brides talking about their name change experiences in this discussion: Changing of name during pandemic.

    Update:

I was able to send in just a certified copy of my marriage license along with my SS-5 application. I received a receipt and my marriage license back within a week and my new social security card a week later.
