Name Change Procedures

Ebony, on February 22, 2023 at 5:20 PM Posted in Ohio Planning 0 4

Hello everyone Smiley catface

I have been trying to figure out the process of getting my last name changed after the wedding. Some people are telling me it cost money and others are telling me it's free. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and I tried googling but just can't seem to find the right/solid answer. Do anyone know the process of getting your last name legally changed in Cleveland, Ohio?

Thank you in advance! Smiley xd

As an Ohio bride myself, I am also researching the process. I think it will cost a little bit, but certainly not a heavy expense. However, since me and my FH will be living out of state (having wedding in our home state), I have found getting married in our new state (courthouse style) is a lot easier than Ohio rules. We still plan on having the ceremony, however it will be technically symbolic. I’m still debating on changing my name at all😅

Here are some links I looked at:
    https://www.theknot.com/content/name-change-ohio

    https://ohio.staterecords.org/marriagerecords/namechange
    https://www.ohiolegalhelp.org/topic/name-change

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for providing those links ! We’re getting married in the virgin island and I’m 2 seconds away from asking my wedding planner about the process there. If anything I’m going to just go to the court house with all documents and hope it’s good enough 😂I’m not going to start the process until we get our marriage license because that’s the document they look for.

There is no cost for changing your name, except for your ID. Those kits are cool, but unnecessary.
First- take the certificate(after filed with the county and stamped- after the wedding), to the SSA.
    Second- take the pro9fproof

    Phone isn't cooperating.

Second, you would take the proof of name change you get at the SSA, to the dmv, along with your marriage certificate.
Once you get new ss card and ID, finish changing banking, insurance, etc, to new name. I've changed my name twice, and aside from paying for a new ID and a voluntary credit and debit card replacement, I've never paid anything.
