My brother died

Laura, on April 9, 2020 at 7:05 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 38

My brother suddenly died a few days ago and i'm crushed. It wasn't from Covid 19, he'd been in ill health for years, but it wasn't expected. He'd previously had at least 7 heart attacks and at least 6 strokes. I say at least because he'd have mini ones of both and after awhile the number gets away from you.

I can't explain the grief. If you've lost a sibling you have some understanding. It's hard because he and I had lost our parents three years apart when we were teenagers back in the 80's so it had been Mike and I against the world since. We were each other's biggest cheerleaders but we also would tell each other the truth without sugar coating it.

Was he perfect? No, but he was a good guy. He loved his wife, his two adult kids and his one year old grandson. i'm lost. I'm not sure how I would have handled my wedding if it had happened now. I'm really grateful he was able to be there. He was frail, but he was there. He was only 3 years older than me, but people thought he was my dad because of his white hair and beard. I will go on, I always have when I lose people. This one is just hard. i'm broken

I’m so extremely sorry for your loss. I understand your pain... My sister passed away a year ago after battling pancreatic cancer. She was only 43. It’s not easy but it will get better eventually. When I look at your bouquet and your brother’s sweatshirt, it makes me smile because purple is the ribbon color for pancreatic cancer 💜. I never fully believed when people said “You’ll always have the memories”. But now I know it’s true. And just like your story and pic brought up nice memories of my sister, you’ll have many days with memories of your brother in the same way. It’s great that your brother was able to attend your wedding. Unfortunately my sister died exactly a month after FH proposed. I pray that you eventually find peace amongst the grief.

I was not raised to believe in a " he is risen from the dead" kind of afterlife. Rather, that as long as someone is here, alive, who remembers a person with loving or friendly thoughts, that person's spirit lives on. You have always thought Mike an anchor in your life. Loving g, supporting e family, good times and bad times. Who in spite of long ill health, completed his most important tasks, raising wonderful children, being your brother when you needed one, a caring person. And when you get past the immediate sadness of loss, you will see that he is still alive, in you, his grown kids, and his grandson, as long as you remember him fondly, for how he touched your lives. Don't block out all the thoughts. You will actively miss him less over time as you realize you carry him with you all the time in your heart, in your mind. He still lives. Talk about your memories. Love him still. Keep him alive, for you, your nephews, and his grandson. You will all be better for it. I am so sorry for all your hurt. Knowing it was coming still is little help for such a feeling of loss. Just get through the coming days. And hold him close. And he still lives on .

I’m so sorry. My heart breaks for you. I lost my smart, funny, generous brother at age 30 a few years ago and am still devastated by the loss. But it does get better.
