Music lovers wedding playlist chat!!!

For people who love music, let’s geek out over wedding tunes! What vibe do you want on the dance floor? What favorite songs do you absolutely have to work in??
And especially, for those of us who listen to any kind of remotely underground genres or stuff not typically played at weddings, how will you reflect that vibe in your wedding while also still giving the older/more traditional guests their Motown classics?

I’m the kind of girl who growing up, when I imagined my wedding, my fantasies always involved people dancing to bangers 🙌 I always secretly wanted to be a DJ but am too much of an introvert. The way I see it, this is my big chance to put together the playlist of my dreams!

does anyone (especially those w similar tastes) have any thoughts on what hard rock and/or hip hop songs are best for weddings and what context to play them in? When we first make our entrance, we are going to have the DJ play the first few verses of the Ramones “Blitzkreig Bop” and then segue into Method Man & Mary J Blige “You’re All I need” right as we walk out. I also love Metallica and would like to play one of their less heavy instrumental songs at some point (Orion). Is during dinner or cocktail hour a good time to do stuff like that?

Also does anyone have any ideas on good classic rock songs to play for slow dances? We are def using the Stones’ Wild Horses at some point, but also want one that’s less about romantic love/passion. My family is all rockers and I’d like songs I can dance w my stepdad and uncle.

And last but not least - how common is it to give the DJ a very specific playlist with a request to not deviate from it? Thats what I plan to do so just wondering how shocked he or she will be when it occurs lol

We had a mix of rock, metal, pop, country and oldies. Ceremony music was a mix of soundtracks and rock, with lyrics and instrumentals. Our families and friends don’t listen to Motown/R&B so that wasn’t on the playlist. We gave our dj a list of songs we wanted to hear and songs/artists that we didn’t want to hear at all as a jumping off point, but we also mainly trusted their judgment to do their job of reading what the crowd responds to. If you want to pick every song with no alternatives, you’re better off making a Spotify list but if guests don’t dance, then there is no way to change it up the way that a professional dj does. And your guests still have to work. Have been guests at several Spotify weddings and they are often duds for that reason.

Yes there were plenty of songs with explicit lyrics and we were slightly more concerned about the puritanical adults in the crowd than the children but we were also aware that they curate their own experience, so if they are uncomfortable they can leave, but no one did. Nor did any parents leave early. While it’s popular online to actively encourage the older guests to leave early with fake exits and other inhospitable behavior -instead of not inviting them in the first place - under the guise that they are all impressionable and easily offended, many are wilder than the younger ones, contrary to popular belief. We wanted a concert/club vibe for the dancing portion and the dj delivered, and guests are still telling us how much fun they had.
