Mountain wedding do's and don'ts

Jessica, on January 30, 2019 at 8:39 PM Posted in Planning 1 17
So I will be getting married in Montana with the love of my life and I need some advise on any do's and don'ts of a mountain wedding. Ceremony will be in or near glacier national park.

Wowwww how beautiful! I’m definitely feeling a little jelly. I absolutely love mountains! People often overlook them for beaches. Be sure to provide plenty of water for your guests. If you plan on getting married at higher altitude this is a must! Also the sun sets sooner in the mountains, so make sure you take pics 20-30 minutes after the sun sets to capture the “blue hour”.

Bug spray! Can't stress it enough! I also got married on the top of a mountain in August. I thought for sure the bugs wouldn't be a problem in the middle of the afternoon when the sun was high in the sky, but nope, we definitely had bite marks all over that our photographer had to edit out!

It will be very VERY small 15 people including us two. I want it to be a evening wedding like 5 pm so we can get sunset pics. Short reception hoping to end it by 10 pm.

Where exactly did you get married? I used to live in Ecuador, near mount Pichincha, and I never had a problem with bugs. I’ve never even seen a mosquito while there; mind you, I was about 10,000 feet above sea level

Im hoping the bugs won't be too bad. Our date is late June 2020. I asked the venue and they said mosquitoes and bugs arnt usually bad. I will definitely provide bug spray and maybe some citronella candles to deter them. I welt up pretty bad with mosquitoes. Crossing my fingers.

That sounds amazing! We eloped on the mountain and had zero guests. I recommend that you go to the site before hand with your photographer about 1 week before the wedding. That way they can scope out where the sun light hits certain areas at certain times of the day. Our photographer did that with us, and we literally chased the sun through the mountains all night until sunset. It was amazing! But since we scoped out the area a week prior, she knew actually where we needed to be during certain times to catch the perfect lighting.

We got married this past August at Worlds End in Northeastern Pennsylvania. We definitely weren't expecting many bugs at the top of the canyon, but boy did we underestimate them!

I was hoping to arrive 3 days prior to the wedding date to finalize vendors. That sounds like a good idea tho. Thank you!

Plenty of water, remind your guests hydrate in advance. Have bartenders who monitor the alcohol consumption more carefully if many of your guests are from lower elevation. Watch out for sun exposure.

Be aware of changing weather patterns and keep your guests and wedding party warm! Even in the summer it can get cold outside with the added shade and elevation. Have a good backup plan for indoors if needed.

Embrace the environment! Bring a good pair of shoes to hike in for photos! I hiked a mountain and ice covered rock in stilettos and it wasn’t exactly easy......

leave time to get pinecones, pine needles and other forest flora out of your dress. Yup that sounds ridiculous... but I had 17 pinecones tangled in my skirt after 45 minutes of photos lol.

enjoy, hydrate yourself, and minted has beautiful mountain themed invites!

If the elevation is high, make sure guests from lower elevations traveling in know about elevation sickness and how alcohol will hit they a lot quicker. You also have the problem of limited cell service or uber/lyfts depending on how truly "in the mountains" the wedding is.

This is the montana sunrise I got to capture while touring up there this weekend!!!

I have read some post and want to let you know, we went up in july stayed three days and hardly had a bug problem, we stayed out late though too. I only got two bites from two late nights up there. It will be rather cool due to the fact they could have a third winter like they did this year. Definitely something different than city living !
