Mother of bride dress advice

Alexandra, on March 19, 2024 at 3:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

Hi all, my mom is having some issues with her dress for the wedding. She loves how it fits in most places except in the lower back area where it is a bit tight and her shapewear has caused a slight roll. She tried shapewear that went higher up but it ended up looking very weird and bulging where the shapewear ended. We were thinking about the option of adding some rhinestone appliques just to the back of the dress - sort of like a half belt but only in the back - I have no idea what that is called. What are your thoughts on something like that? We then realized you wouldn't be able to sew a whole piece on like that because it would go across the zipper, so we were thinking two separate pieces sewed onto either side of the zipper? A full belt probably wouldn't work with this dress because of the drape in the front as you can see in the picture. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated! I also included a picture of some appliques just as an idea.

Honestly, these pics look fine to me but I'll take your word for it that it looks weird IRL. I would take it to a tailor with this shapewear and show them the issues. A bunch of appliqués seems like overkill for such a minor issue, but a seamstress may be able to do something like letting it out a bit in the waist.

I agree with Jasmine. I wouldn't go the applique route. Has she tried a shapeware bodysuit?

It looks fine in the pictures. I wouldn't call any attention to the back with extra bling.

I do see what you're saying. It's a beautiful dress and looks great on her, but that would bother me, too. If she's sure it isn't a question of needing alterations, probably to let it out some, I'd second the idea of shareware that goes all the way up as in a one piece bodysuit. Forget the appliqué. I agree that will just call more attention to the issue.

She looks great but if it's really bothering her I would suggest a one piece bodysuit style shapewear. This will eliminate the top rolling down!

The other replies are right that she could try a full-body shapewear like this. She wouldn't have to worry about picking a bra (which can also cause rolls on the upper body) and it would probably be cheaper than alterations.

I agree that she looks great in her dress. That will work fine. People will be focused on her joy seeing you get married. If needing a little extra confidence, try some of the options suggested above, though. Another option would be to add a short overskirt in sheer black material across her back, sort of like a peplum top.

    Shapewear, not shareware!
