Modern or Traditional: Ring Shopping?

Kelly, on October 16, 2018 at 11:05 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 128

When it came to your engagement ring, how did you tackle ring shopping? Did your fiance(e) super traditional and pick it out on their own? Did they have some assistance from your Pinterest account or one of your closest friends? Or did you take a more modern approach by giving your input on what kind of ring you wanted? Smiley ring

Traditional, he designed it himself! He knew I liked solitaire and my mom has a marquise diamond so he bought me a marquise diamond as well. So special!

We found my ring on Letgo(for $80),I went and got it with him, and he had me keep it safe before he proposed (he was in school)

    Definitely nothing traditional about that.

    Non-traditional.

I had a long and honest talk to my boyfriend (now husband) about my hopes and dreams for our future, including an engagement ring. We had talked about marriage beforehand, several times, actually, so it wasn't something I just dropped on him like a bomb.

My intention was to steer him from traditional ring shopping, which is something I know would have been way too overwhelming for him, and to also save him money in the process. I knew that I didn't want a traditional engagement ring with diamond(s), and I didn't want him to waste his money on one. He was actually very relieved and appreciative that I was so open and honest with him. I told him that I had an idea of what I wanted, which wasn't something he could just go into any jewelry shop and find without a hitch. What I wanted was seemingly more rare at the time (a rose gold and morganite ring), but I knew of a local jewelry shop that specialized in custom-made items, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg to do so. He liked my idea, so we went and I basically designed my own engagement ring (and wedding band), and the owner liked my ring so much that they advertised it on billboards all over the area for close to a year!

Kinda middle. I gave him basics of what I liked (rose gold, no halo) and he went from there and designed it.

We went out shopping for fun one day, just to look. That’s when I told FH what I preferred in a ring. Then he went out and picked it himself, and it’s perfect!

He knew I wanted rose gold and morganite. He took that information and picked out his own cut and style.

Totally modern. He wanted me to have exactly what I wanted. He had me pick my ring within the first year we were together. He didnt propose until well over a yr later. I still always wanted the same ring and thats what he got me.

I made a Google Drive folder with pictures of all the rings that I wanted (organized by stone type and price point), and he picked one from there.

We walked into a store and I said I loved this non traditional ring. I don’t ever wear jewelry and he knows nothing about it, so we had to go the non traditional route.

and I got the ring I wanted, which is great because it is the only thing I wear:

Modern. He definitely had some assistance from me. He would show me pictures and ask if I liked something to help him get an idea of what he should be looking for.

My fiance and I took a mixed approach to this one! We had discussed for a while what we both like in terms of style and he had access to my pinterest. I had gone with friends to look and have fun and see what I liked in person. The next weekend we decided to just walk into a store together and browse at what I had looked at with my friends. We ended up talking and discussing with the store helpers for quite some time. We decided on the setting we both liked best out of two I had mainly been eyeing but the color of metal, shape of diamond (from two I had narrowed down to liking), and size of diamond were all his decisions he made himself at a later date without me. So while I knew the setting I would be most likely getting, every other detail was surprise and it was honestly perfect that way! For two type A personalities, it still allowed for some tradition mixed in with some control!

I'd say we were middle ground, I told him that I didn't want him to spend too much on it and that I preferred something white gold and low profile since I work in healthcare. He did the rest on his own and I absolutely love my ring!
