mob Dresses for a younger Mom

Maddie, on August 23, 2021 at 6:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Hi!!

My mom's been looking forward to going shopping to buy herself a dress for my wedding and I wanted to see if anybody had any good ideas on MOB dresses that would be good for younger moms (She's 52 and doesn't want to look matronly). My mom is partial to wrap dresses which I am trying to keep her away from because she literally has an entire closet full of them. She likes darker colors - I don't have an opinion on what color she ends up wearing. I don't have a bridal party so as long as it's a dark jewel tone, it will look fine in photos. Also 1/2 sleeves or long sleeves would be a plus since my wedding is in February.

She sent me a beautiful black and gold, floral, Ellen Tracy dress yesterday that she found on Pinterest, but it's old and not available anymore. It looked similar to this one (found on David's Bridal and ALSO no longer available):

I want to see her in THIS DRESS from BHLDN...but she didn't seem excited about it when I showed her:

Any thoughts, links, suggestions of styles or designers to look at? ... Let's not kid each other guys, my mom and I just wanna look at as many pretty dresses as possible Smiley tongue

I would definitely steer clear of bridal shops and any dresses labeled "Mother of the Bride". She should look anywhere she has bought special occasion dresses from before, plus department stores and women's boutiques. Can she shop in person where you live? That's the best bet, to just go somewhere and try on a bunch of things all in one day.

So, the keywords I'd be looking for to find another similar dress would be - brocade or jacquard. Some brands that I know stock dresses like that include Eliza J, Chi Chi London, Adriana Papell, Kay Unger, Alfred Sung. Not sure if she wants full length but I found some similar things:

I would check out either Amazon or Azazie. Amazon has tons of dresses, but if you go that route I would make sure you read reviews and you pick something with free returns. I also looked at Azazie and that have some very pretty dresses that I don't think look matronly.

My mom, who is in a similar age range and presents young, loves Adrianna Pappell gowns, which are available everywhere from her website to Macy’s to Dillards to Amazon.
A friend also recommended Mac Dougal when my mom was looking for a gown for another event.

I second Azazie. They have a huge "mother of the bride" section but many of the dresses aren't matronly at all. Plus everything comes in like 50 different colors.

If you have outlets nearby like Nordstrom Rack, Bloomingdale's Outlet, Saks Off the 5th, they usually have a pretty good selection of special occasion dresses.

Just don't look at the standard mother of the bride dresses. Look for evening gowns. This is one my mom was going to wear. She's 49. Here are styles I looked at for my mom. Tell her to find a dress she would wear to a fancy party. Second one is from Nordstrom. Try Net-A-Porter, Nordstrom, Nieman Marcus, etc.

Browse local department stores. That way you should be able to try them on before you buy (are they allowing that again yet with Covid?). Stay away from dresses that are marketed as Mother of the Bride/Groom. No clue why they make them so unflattering.

I know two people (one aunt and a friend's mom) who got their MOB/MOG dresses at a bridal salon but they were bridesmaid dresses. They were more conservative than most bridesmaid dresses you typically see, but still beautiful. Here is a link to one that looks similar to the one my aunt wore for my cousin's wedding. Best of luck to you!
