Middle Name Change in Washington?

Anna, on May 24, 2019 at 10:25 PM Posted in Washington Planning 0 5
So I’m planning on changing my middle name to my maiden name after I get married. I live in Washington State where middle name changes require a court order, not simply a marriage certificate. However, I noticed that in order to change a name with the DMV, you can also simply bring in a passport with the new name, in lieu of either a court order or a marriage certificate. So is there anything stopping me from getting my SS card first (federal so they won’t care about changing my middle name), then changing my passport (again, federal) and THEN going to the DMV with just my new passport and no marriage license to change my driver’s license/vehicle registration? Has anyone done this? I just want to avoid the extra step of getting a court order just to change my name to first, maiden, married.

I know nothing about Washington but I’m not sure if it will work. I had a friend in Texas try to add her maiden name to her middle name, social security allowed it and she got her new ss card but dmv said nope get a court order. They wouldn’t accept the social security card and it turned into a big ordeal. So you can try it but not sure it will work!

Yeah the DMV won’t take a SS card, but since they do take a passport, I’m planning to do the passport before the DMV, and then just use that. Since a passport can be used in lieu of a court order or a marriage license in Washington according to the DMV website.

Hey Anna!! Welcome to the WeddingWire community! It’s great to have you here!

I would recommend talking to someone in the DMV in order to ask someone directly. It will save you time in the long run if it turns out that there is an issue with using your new passport. Better to be safe than sorry!

Are you sure about all of these requirements? My cousin got married and moved her maiden name to her middle name and changed her last name to her husband's name, all without a court order. Also, I went to the DMV to get my new license immediately after going to the Social Security office. They had an update in the system that my name change was pending (I also had paperwork from the SS office) and just needed to see a certified marriage certificate. I agree that talking to someone at the DMV would be helpful so you don't end up doing extra work.

I was able to change my middle and last name with my marriage license for my SS card. Then i used my SS card and marriage license for my license. BUT when I applied for my passport they only change my last name and said I needed a court order to change my middle name. The only other way is if your new name is written on your marriage license which i think some states do, but not Washington. If I knew this ahead of time i wouldn't have change my middle name...
