Medical on cruise ship?

rose, on October 15, 2017 at 3:12 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 20

Anyone have any experience with the medical support on a cruise ship? FH and I are talking over taking a small mini-moon cruise. I'm just a super anxious person so I need to make sure there's medical available on the ship. What ships would you recommend in regards to safety, activities, etc.?

Do one of you have a medical condition that may need extra care?

Most cruise ships do offer medical assistance. As for the quality of the care, I have no idea. You may also want to look into travelers insurance that provides some medical coverage, in case you need medical care when you are out of the states.

No it's literally just my anxiety and panic attacks. I'm planning on taking some "as needed" meds with me, but I don't like taking medication so I'm hoping that if I know there's decent medical care I might be ok.

Hello Rose! Interesting you should mention a cruise. My FH and I are going on a short cruise this week just to test the waters to see how I will hold up. The last time I was on the water I got sick. So, I called my doctor and told her I needed the patch. However, to answer your question yes there should be a staffed doctor on board. I check on the ship I'm traveling on which is Carnival. Just Call the cruise line and ask I'm pretty sure each of the ships have a doctor on staff.

I went to medical on Carnival when I was feeling sea sick. It's a pretty common problem so they treated it like it was nbd, but they sold me medicine and I was good.

@SLR was it expensive? I've read a few articles about it being over priced.

Everything on the ship is expensive. My advice would be to get medicine before you get on the ship and have on hand. Just my thoughts. My ins. didn't cover the patch, but it was worth it for me to have because motion sickness was the worst exp of my life!!

I received amazing medical care on my last cruise. It wasn't expensive and they didn't charge me for some things.

From what I have heard, most cruise ships have decent medical help available. It would be too much of a liability for them not to.

Most cruise ships have both doctors and nurses on board. I have friends who are doctors and nurses who have worked on many different cruise lines.

If you are concerned about the expense, see your own doctor before you go, stabilize your conditions and take your own meds with you.

    Get travel insurance.

Just came back from my wedding cruise. On carnival they were able to perform X-rays for my father in law and able to treat pneumonia for him. It's a full er at least that's what my mil said

They have doctors as well as nurses or paramedics on board. They even have dialysis for travelers who need it. Most of the time the doctors are from other countries (not always) but it's still decent care. If it got serious enough to where they couldn't handle it, they'd fly you out to get the proper care

Medical on a ship is SUPER EXPENSIVE. But definitely something you do not need to worry about.

This is what I found from google. I would google the actual cruise line you are planning to take. Have fun!

There are medical professionals in basically all cruise ships. If you need care it can get expensive because of additional insurance etc.

Even if you don't get seasick or unsure if you will, being the seasickness patches or tablets and bring some basics like Tylenol, ibuprofen, Neosporin, a few Band-Aids etc. Just do you don't have to pay extra for them. Eta spelling

The one time I went on a cruise with FH's family both of his parents were sick (I think one had pneumonia and one had bronchitis. They started feeling sick the day before, so they didn't contract anything on the ship). The ship doctors didn't take insurance so they had to pay upfront, but their insurance reimbursed them once they got home.

We went on a Carnival cruise while DH was on peritoneal dialysis. His doctor was fine with it provided we had travel insurance - and if dialysis goes wrong, it does it fast. The doc was confident they would be able to look after him on board if anything happened. Seasickness was our only issue and we brought meds for that with us. You’ll be fine.

Rose, as someone who understands your concerns I think its great that you are thinking ahead to take some medication with you, if not just for peace of mind. There is a medical infirmary area but for basics, like a portable urgent care/ first aid.

But the worst I ever saw while cruising was an elderly gentleman being actually air lifted for a severe health issue. So they are prepared heaven forbid.

I had a panic attack while cruising. It was on land at a port though. I went back to my room and took a 3 hr nap. Before our cruise left port to even get going an elderly man had to use medics. He didn’t end up cruising. Also be mindful that passports are good to have in case any medical emergency leads to going to a port hospital and the ship leaving without you. You will need the passport to fly home.
