Mashed Potato Martini's??

Margaret, on July 12, 2016 at 1:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

Egads... so this is what I have to deal with 11 days out... We are having a mashed potato bar. Not unusual at all. My caterer has changed things up somewhat and I'm not so thrilled with her plans. We changed a couple things back, but the big decision (ha...in the greater scheme of things) is what to serve the stupid spuds in.

At first she changed it so that condiments for the masheds are on the table...that became problematic...so we put them back onto a station of their own.

NOW the issue is what to serve them in...caterer says put them on the plate with other food... I've seen them served in martini glasses... I know... I know... first world problems.

How would you want to have your mashed potatoes served - on your plate or separate glass??

I don't think a martini glass because seems like things wouldn't fit or g eye messy. but not in a plate with my other food. Maybe a little bowl or something fun. But then again as a hungry guest I'd just be happy to have it and intrigued by the uniqueness of the mashed potatoes bar.

I did a catered event for a VIP donor with a mashed potato bar in martini glasses. It was freaking awesome and people loved it. Wasn't messy, but we did have people go back 2 or 3 times because the portions were tiny. If I find some photos in my files, I'll post.

I've only been to 2 weddings. One had a mash bar during the cocktail hour. They were served in martini glasses. They could have been served in a shoe. It's mashed potatoes. Who cares?! (As in, everyone loves mashed taters, not as in, screw your problem, to be clear. I'm all for mashed potatoes.)

Seriously though, the martini glass was fine. Left me wanting a bit more but not like "man that was only 2 spoons".

Unpopular opinion, but I hate the way mashed potatoes look in martini glasses. They're this big blob of white stuff; I don't need to see that through glass at all angles. I'm happy to plop them on my plate and go from there.

I hate food in martini glasses. So 80s. Nothing screams shoulder pads on a yacht more than shrimp cocktail in a martini glass.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I like vodka martini's in my martini glasses...I would eat potatoes out of one because potatoes, but I'd prefer to see them on the plate.

Although, my grandmother has these mashed potato bowls that look like potatoes. They hold a special place in my heart.

I've seen this once and it was in a martini glass. I don't think it's that it *has* to be in a martini glass, I just feel like part of the fun is having it as a separate station. Can they do glass bowls or side-plates or something?

Looove that you're doing this by the way!

Ask your caterer to check into restaurantware.com Tons of cute options there. Pretty affordable as well. As a vendor, they should have access to ordering from this site.

http://www.restaurantware.com/incline-bowl-seagreen-6-5-ounces-100-count-box/ this comes in clear as well as solid white. It's different but a nice bowl- we used the solid white for a butternut squash bisque and it held up extremely well.

Mashed potatoes on a plate are a side dish. Mashed potatoes in a martini glass are a station.

All our venues here offer them in a martini glass. I'm not saying it's new; we did it 15 years ago. But on a plate, it's just potatoes.

If it's a part of dinner, I'd want the potatoes on my plate. I'd find it awkward to have all my food on my plate, except the potatoes. If they have to be separate, I'd go for a bowl that could at least be easily accessible and on the same level as my plate.

I don't know about anyone else, but I love food. So all the food on one plate and cocktail in the other hand. If my other hand is holding a martini glass of potatoes and the other my food, where's my cocktail go?!

    Dramatic, I know

Just chiming in to say this is still my favorite station ever at a wedding. carbs 4 life. but it should somehow be on a separate plate or bowl or glass though...that's half the fun (and so you can pile more bacon and cheese on)

My cateror offers them as a station- so it's single servings and you top as you want.

    That's the novelty of it.

I don't care- I want some fucking mashed potatoes with my steak- if that's how they come- then that's how they come. whatever.

It's self serve with the toppings- but I've only ever seen it as "a station" - I like the self servings for toppings. but honestly I don't care what it's served in. #potatoesforlife

I think it looks cute in a martini glass! We had pulled pork sundaes for a passed app and they were whipped sweet potatoes topped with bbq pulled pork. They were served in the tiny mason jars, the half pint ones and they were really cute. Not sure if that goes with your theme or not, but it is an option.

Put them in martini glasses and have a "Mashtini Bar."

Not my idea, saw it on Google.

Hey @JenP... while I appreciate the advice...as a 5star user I'm amazed no one has mentioned this to me (rolls eyes) and certainly not as eloquently as you. Of course, WWJo offered to take care of this technical issue and I've yet to take her up on it. But, yeah... if I could. I would.

I am serving buffet, and yeah, the topping will now be in bowls at the 'station' where the potatoes are in a chafing dish.

So far, it looks like half and half with plate vs. martini. We are planning on putting that table at the end due to some other space constraints, so folks will be able to juggle plate and glass if we go that route.

I'm glad everyone seems to love mashies as much as I do... should be a hit!
