Married Name

Veronica, on October 7, 2020 at 10:26 AM Posted in Married Life 1 15

We got married last July and moved last October. I had my social security card updated in August, but waited to have my credit cards and debit cards changed until after I moved. Everything with that was completed in February so I planned on getting my license updated, but because of Covid that wasn't an option. Today we have closing on our first home, but I'm not sure what they will consider my legal last name since my social security card has my married name, but my license has my maiden name. Any idea?

Your social security card is a more valid form of ID than your license, however, it may be an issue that they don't match.

That's what I thought. I'm hoping it isn't an issue, but I guess we will find out.

I'm sure with everything going on they'll understand. Specially if you have a marriage certificate. Congrats on the new home!! Smiley heart

I’d advise you to bring a copy of your marriage certificate at all, should help if any issues arise

I will definitely bring my marriage license and social security card as well as my ID. My ID is literally the only thing I haven't updated. I had issues with updating my bank account which caused a delay hence why I didn't get my ID updated prior to Covid.

Your lender should have reached out and asked what names needed to be on the deed and exactly how they needed to appear. (At least Mine did, we just bought a house in July).
Since your married name is your legal name I don’t think you’ll have an issue.

Yes, our lender confirmed names. I was just concerned if they were going to have an issue with my license saying one name and my social saying another. I'm hoping given that the dvm was closed for a while they will understand.

I, actually, just went through this same thing! We got married in February and I changed my social security card in March but wasn't able to change my driver's license until this summer due to COVID. We bought a new house in July, and my license was in my maiden name (but my social security card was in my married name). They put everything in my married name, and it wasn't an issue at all that my license didn't match. When they do a credit check, it'll show your maiden name as an associated name of yours, which I think was why it wasn't an issue.

Thank you! They made a copy of my license and that's it. They didn't ask about it having a different last name.

I’d bring the marriage certificate along too, just because of the driver’s license discrepancy. I’m planning to change my name and I know COVID is making this all harder and I’m also changing states. My car tags expired the end of September (wedding date is Oct 24) and instead of paying registration twice, I was going to move it all to the new state and then just change the name after we got the marriage certificate back, but I have to have an appointment and the earliest appointment I could get was after the wedding so maybe I can just get it all done at once anyway.
