Marriage license—parents’ place of birth?

Gen, on May 2, 2019 at 4:14 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 14
I made the appointment to get our marriage licenses yesterday (yay) and the woman said we’d just need to bring our driver’s licenses, a witness, and to know the “city and state that our parents were born in.”

So, here’s the issue... I’ve been estranged from my dad for almost 10 years. I didn’t mention it to the county clerk on the phone because I figured my mom knew where my dad was born, but turns out she has no idea. We even checked my birth certificate, and under “father’s place of birth” it just says “New York” (no city).

Ive thought about calling the clerk back and asking if just the state is enough but it’s making me really anxious to call back and ask about this.

Were any of you asked to provide this info when applying for your marriage license? Do you think just the state he was born in will be enough? (We are in New Jersey btw)

Yes, this is pretty common. I actually guessed for my parents because I didn't know either and wasn't able to ask. The clerks I spoke with were super nice and helpful so don't be scared calling the clerk to explain your situation.

I wouldn't worry too much about calling, there have to be tons of people with the same concerns. There are lots of people who don't know one or both parents or have been adopted.

No reason to be anxious about calling the clerk. There are many people who don’t even know their other parent, so this is really not a big deal. And it’s not like you did something wrong. What’s on your birth certificate is official information that can be used for anything else. So New York only will be enough.

I wouldn’t worry either, you could just bring your birth certificate with you to show them if your concerned it would be an issue

I live in NY and we just filled out the application today. Ours only asks for our parents maiden names and the country. I'm pretty sure the state is fine.

Oh man, I never thought about this! I am in the same boat! I think I will be ok though, my mom seems to still remember my Bio fathers SSN ( they have been divorced since I was like 7, 20 years ago) Smiley xd Good luck!

I was - and thankfully I did know, but the lady who we were working with had told us (and this may be different for you, so check, for sure) that if we don't know, the "closest major city" will be fine, or if we really have NO IDEA to just put "unknown" or leave it blank. It's not a huge issue since like previous responses have said - there are plenty of people out there who don't know their parents let alone where they were born! Smiley smile

That's good to hear! I can't imagine that being a cause for denial. As others have said, so many people may not have access to that information. Neither of my parents were even born in this country, so I doubt they even have the city on record at the county clerk's lol.
