Marriage License

Leah, on March 31, 2024 at 5:39 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 2

Hello! My Fiancé and I plan on having out friends father become an ordained minister online so he would be able to marry us on the day of. I live in PA and know the marriage license is good for 60 days. I just wanted more clarification on what happens next. Meaning, we get our marriage license a few weeks before our wedding, we have the ceremony with vows and our friends father, but do we fill out more paperwork afterwards or ....? Thanks in advance!

Generally you get the license in advance, your officiant fills out any necessary information and signs it on the day (usually just after the ceremony, along with any required witnesses), and then you file it with the county clerk’s office sometime in the next few weeks. You’ll want to ask the exact timing. I think we had a month.

This is not only state-specific, but county-specific so make sure you double check. If your license is valid for 60 days you get it less than 60 days before your ceremony. Depending where you live also affects whether you or your officiant send it in (mine did). Following that, you will receive a copy of your marriage certificate from the county (mine never came, I called to request a copy after a couple months).
