Marriage license questions…

Rachel, on March 25, 2022 at 10:51 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8
Hi, Everyone!

I wanted to ask some questions about marriage licenses… the first, how soon before your wedding date can or should you apply to get your license from the county clerk? My fiancé and I are getting married on June 26th but our appointment is May 19th, do we need to schedule it for a certain time period or will that date work (we live in California, if that helps since I know rules are different for different states)
Also, my MIL said that she’s surprised we had to make an appointment as “she thought the pastor took care of that”….? I tried googling what she means but I haven’t come up with anything supporting that. I can’t imagine that’s the case as I thought the couple getting married need to be the ones signing the document and taking care of fees, etc.? I did see something about the pastor/officiant being the one to return the marriage license to the clerk’s office after the wedding, but I can’t be sure…?
Can anyone provide some insight? Thanks so much!

You should really check with the county where you are getting married...every county is different. For example, if a license is only valid for 30 days in your county, then your May 19 appointment date won't work. Not sure what your MIL is thinking...you are right that you and your FS are responsible for the license. Maybe she meant that the pastor/officiant mails it back after the ceremony, which is common.

Call the Register of Deeds Office in the county where you have scheduled your appointment for specific answers. Some of the information may be on that county’s website on the Register of Deeds page.

I did check that and for California, marriage licenses are good for 90 days so that piece I did find out! I think you’re right that my MIL could be confused about the officiant sending the license back after the ceremony, thank you! 💖💖

California marriage licenses are currently the bane of my existence 😅 We're doing a destination wedding, but you have to appear in person to apply for a license, but we only have 2 days before the ceremony that we'll be in town. I'm stressing just a little bit 😅

Hi! Just got married last month in California. We applied for our marriage license back in December. Once issued, we had to get married in 90 days. Gave our marriage license to the church wedding coordinator the day before our wedding. After the ceremony, the priest completed it and mailed back to the county we applied at. Just received our marriage certificate in the mail a few days ago. Hope that helps.

Omg, thank you! That’s exactly what I thought the process was after reading more and doing more research! That’s great, we’re getting the license in May and the wedding is in June so we’ll have plenty of time! Thank you again!!

You are right in that rules might vary from state to state, possibly even more within the counties. Here in Illinois, where my husband and I live and got married in, we were required to get our marriage license no more than 60 days out from our wedding date. We didn't want to get ours that far out in advance, so instead we got ours a week before our wedding, and we gave it to our officiant at the rehearsal dinner, which was her only requirement and involvement.
