Marriage license and permit

It depends on your state - marriage licenses in many states are valid for around 30 days, though it totally depends on your state. My husband and I picked up our marriage license around 3 weeks before our wedding. Since your wedding is in October, I would probably plan to get the license around 2-3 weeks ahead of time.

I agree that you should look on the state site to see what their requirements are. You can't do it too far out since the license is only good for so long (usually 30-60 days) but don't wait until the absolute last minute in case you have to go back a second time (had a friend that didn't realize she needed her divorce paperwork).

Like Lisa and Caryn said, this is going to depend on your state. Google “<state> marriage license” and then click on the result that is for the clerk’s site and read through their instructions and guidance on timelines.

I echo what everyone above said. I'd also add to look up the requirements in the state where the wedding will be performed. If you live in one state but will be getting married somewhere else, the requirements might be different.
