Maldives

Teresa, on October 13, 2019 at 11:53 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

The FH and I absolutely LOVE the beach and we want our honeymoon to be something we will probably never get to do. So I was thinking Maldives. He agrees but he is worried about the price and travel. I know this might seem silly but we were wondering if anyone has traveled there.

1. Is it as magnificent as it looks in all the images and videos online?

2. What type of budget should we look at? Currently we have about $8k that will be designated for the honeymoon.

3. We want to go shortly after the wedding (10/03/20) but we are sure if that would be a good time of year there to visit. Has anyone gone there in early-mid October?

I think the Maldives had a coupe in 2018. Has the political situation calmed down there?

My understanding is that the area mainly affected by this is Male City. All the resorts are still safe to travel to and since we won't be doing any excursions other than scuba diving, I haven't worried about it. I will look deeper into it though.

The Maldives looks absolutely gorgeous, Teresa! I’ve never been but I would love to one day. I think it’s such a fab honeymoon destination.

The WeddingWire honeymoon section has a page dedicated to the Maldives with a ton of info, check it out - Maldives Honeymoon. According to this resource, May to November is monsoon season but the weather is still warm and prices are considerably lower.

Would you consider speaking to a travel agent about the trip and getting some support in planning and with a budget?

I'm not sure when you're getting married/going on your honeymoon, but I read an article here on wedding wire that said if you want a pricey honeymoon, to get a credit card with travel rewards, pay your monthly bills with it, pay if off every month, then add the points towards your trip. My FH and I are getting married in October 2020 and we just got cards and will use it until we go on our honeymoon. We are also asking for honeyfund donations instead of a traditional registry. I don't need another microwave or blender, so that's what we are doing. Hope this helps a little bit! We are looking at going to Xcaret Hotel in Mexico, it's all inclusive and has several theme parks and lots of restaurants and bars! So seems like a good overall package for the money we will spend.

That’s a good idea. I have a big CC that gives me points for travel. I’ve just never used it for that. Thanks for sharing.
mid you’re talking about the Xaret in Playa Del Carmen. We went there 2 years ago with a group of friends. It’s a really nice place to stay. I’m all about all inclusive and we’ve done 3 now. I’ll be honest though, for my and my tastebuds it was a little too far from the center of town. BUT!!! If you’re a sea turtle lover like I am the animal park attached to it is an absolute MUST! I cried like a baby and spent the last 2 free hours we had at the resort just watching the turtles swim.
    im getting married 10/03/2020.
thanks for the tip and I hope you have a wonderful wedding and honeymoon!

Awesome, thank you I will check out the Maldives Honeymoon section.
we’ve thought about it but with everything else we’re busy figuring out we haven’t looked into one yet. I guess I always thought they charge a big fee for that service. Am I mistaken?

Some travel agents don't charge booking or service fees, so it's definitely worth looking in to! In this case, they make money their money through commission with hotels, resorts, airlines, etc.

There are also otherbenefits to gain from using the expertize and service of a travel agent, check out this WeddingWire article for more info - Why Use a Travel Agent for Honeymoons & Destination Weddings.

Congratulations! I had to pipe in...

    1. YES! A year and a half later, husband and I still marvel at the fact that we were there. It truly is a magnificent place.

    2. Airfare from Los Angeles was approx $1500/person. We stayed at Cinnamon Dhonveli in an overwater bungalow for a week, approx $7000. It could’ve been less if surfing was taken out of the equation, had different accommodations, or stayed at another resort.

    3. We follow the resort surf spot’s (Pasta Point) IG account (basically torturing ourselves lol), and the weather looks absolutely divine right now, judging from recent posts.

    Have a wonderful time!

Thank you for the information! I’m definitely leaning towards the over water bungalow. I mean honestly, who wouldn’t haha. We’ve have never surfed but it looks so fun. I do know we want to scuba dive all we can do we’re getting certified before we go anywhere.
We plan on taking 8 days off work so we can enjoy our honeymoon. I figure a day of traveling there and back with roughly a week on the water should be time well spent.
