Making back-up plans for the honeymoon - have you road tripped las -> Lax?

Gwendolyn, on May 24, 2020 at 5:19 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 5

Hi!

With all of the uncertainty right now, I am starting to research back-up plans for our honeymoon in August. Unfortunately we have everything booked and paid for in Hokkaido, Japan - but it is looking more and more unlikely we will be able to go.

One of the things I'm considering is flying into Las Vegas where we would spend 2 nights relaxing, gambling (maybe), and food touring. From there we would rent a convertible and make the drive to Yosemite and stay in a cabin for 2-3 nights. From there we would drive to Los Angeles for food touring and general wandering, for 3 nights.

We LOVE food, nature, and walking around to see neat things. Suggestions? Have you made any of the legs of this drive? Thoughts on feasibility in late-August?

I did this 4x. Late August is great, if you don’t mind the heat, like we do. The 3rd time we went to LV, there was heat wave, and we jumped from car to building, to car. You literally can cook from your car hood 🤣

Book the cabin at Yosemite at least 1-1.5 years ahead!!!!! We barely got any hotel or cabin when we went to Yosemite spontaneously (we like to rock climb, and our oldest son is addicted to it). July-August is best for camping at Yosemite!
For the hotels at LV, I recommend to look for deals now, when they are desperately need customers! You can book now for in advance trip. I highly recommend Paris or Caesar! Others are just so-so... I prefer Paris due to the good food they have inside.

You might want to stop at Death Valley, Ghost Town, and on the way back maybe take the famous highway 1!

That's a really good point, which I think neither of us were thinking about too much - we don't like heat that much. It's a dry heat so we can manage (unlike Tokyo in August) but we will likely not do much out and about during the day on the strip or in LA with the heat.

I've found some through AirBnB and VRBO - I guess with this COVID situation there's a bit of availability. But I am worried about booking only a month out!

Thank you, we will check out Paris! I've been to Caeser's but I don't know if I've even seen the Paris hotel!

While this sounds fun, it doesn't sound entirely restriction-proof. CA is at a stay-at-home order through July, so they are unlikely to be fully open by August.

Is there a way for you to get your hands on a camper/RV? That might make it easier to bear the heat/keep yourself safe.

We are going to keep an eye on the situation for sure, should we go this route (well, any route). We would be going the last week of August or early September, so hopefully things are shaping up better. We shall have to see. Smiley sad
FH would rather not drive anything large (we were looking at a convertible and hotels/cabins).
