Makeup and hair for grooms

Ben, on May 10, 2023 at 7:20 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 12
Hi! We are two grooms and after our engagement shoot we are both thinking makeup (for skin tone evening and under eye help) and hair might be a good idea for our wedding. All the makeup and hair folks we see are focused on brides and female bridal party and we are currently in the process of emailing out to see about makeup and hair for men. Adding to this, one of us is Indian so we are looking for someone who knows how to work with different skin tones. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions re: finding hair/makeup help for men and/or things to ask about/for when we do? Neither of us wear makeup in our lives otherwise so we’re relatively clueless about it.

As far as makeup, unless you have blemishes to cover, it’s not necessary unless you want to wear it. A significant number of men don’t wear any makeup at all at the wedding. For hair, browse Pinterest and Instagram to see what catches your eye. Instagram is great for finding local vendors of all types including hair/makeup.

There is a page here on grooming of grooms.

It does not say how to find someone qualified in groom makeup.

In terms of make up, I would find an airbrush artist in your area and do a trial with them. Airbrush makeup would probably be best for you, since you are not used to the feeling of make up on your skin. Airbrush make up is super light-weight and most people can’t even tell they are wearing it. And not only does it photograph well, it tends to look better in person (ie, not “cakey”), and lasts all day/night and through all weather conditions. I would definitely schedule a trial with them first though, just to make sure you like it, and actually want it for your wedding day. If you find you don’t like wearing make up, you could always have your photographer touch up dark eyes or imperfections of the skin when they are editing your photos.

I’d been curious about airbrush makeup- just saw someone mention it in their vendor profile. Thank you!

Absolutely! I use it for every event that will be photographed. It just tends to remain weightless
and flawless for 20+ hours. And I always feel that I just look “healthy” in airbrush make up. Whereas traditional make up tends to give my skin a fake unnatural look (plus it can also cause the dreaded “jaundice skin” and flash back). If you have a trial done, let us know how it goes!
Oh, and make sure you get instructions from the make up artist in terms of shaving, moisturizing, etc. the morning of your trial!

Every makeup artist I reached out to had services for the groom that could be added to the package, so most wedding HMUA should be used to this and have plenty of experience putting something together for men!

Cheers. I think I’m mostly responding to what I’ve seen in the initial auto response messages I’m getting when I send out inquiries. No one yet has proactively offered grooms hair or makeup, even when I begin my request with, “we are a gay male couple…”

If I were you I'd go to a make-up counter at your mall and ask for assistance. They are usually helpful with not only helping you find products but showing you how to apply them yourselves. This would be especially helpful for darker skin tones to ensure the right shade.

Thank you- yes, that’s definitely an option we were discussing. Hire an MUA to do a personalized tutorial to learn the basics and then do it ourselves on the day of. Much cheaper option too, I imagine.

I would recommend using the diversity filter on the WW searches and contact artists directly. Or you can hit department stores/ Sephora, find your shades, purchase, then have your own items ready for a professional make-up artists on wedding day. If you have friends who wear make-up, they can also point you in the right direction for quality products. Many men get beauty done for their big day. Good luck!
