Maiden name to middle name

Sarah, on October 10, 2022 at 11:35 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 3

I am highly considering making my maiden name my new middle name. I definitely want my husbands last name to be the same as him and our possible future children. I am not SUPER attached to my maiden name but at the same time it's kind of hard to let go of. My family is small so I feel like it would still keep me connected to them. Plus my middle name has no particular meaning. My name is Sarah Elizabeth so it's such a common combination that I think I might prefer to just lose Elizabeth and made my maiden name my middle name. Is anyone doing this/has anyone done this? Was the process difficult to do?

I didn’t but the lady at social security asked if I wanted to move it. So, it seems like it’s straight forward. I know each state is different as far as changing your name. Moving your maiden name to your middle name is pretty common though. I hope you not have any issues.

In Iowa when you change your name while filling out your marriage license/certificate you can legally change any part of it at that time, including your first and middle. So at least in my state it would be very easy to do.

In california, you present the new name on the marriage license application. Upon the marriage after the officiant sends in the license, your name seems to be changed . You order a certified marriage certificate used for social security and other places to change your name in those places. That's when you need to be aware of the different places who need your new name.
