Maiden name on marriage certificate?

Leonormorrow, on June 4, 2020 at 9:57 PM Posted in Maryland Planning 1 4
Hello all! My fiancé and I recently sent in the paperwork to apply for a marriage certificate and received the documents in the mail today.

However I put my maiden name down and i realise now they didn’t ask/there’s no place to put my new married name except for after my fiancé’s first name. Is this right? Was I supposed to put married name already?
If not can I still use the certificate to change my name after marriage since it’ll be there next to my fiancé’s? Thanks!

Hi! Unfortunately it sounds like Maryland is one of the states where it easier to change your name if you list it on your marriage certificate. I'd call the county clerk's office and ask if it will be easier to update your current forms or to petition the court after your ceremony.

Thanks! There’s no place to list it so I was confused. I will call tomorrow to be sure.

I work for Maryland courts and your marriage certificate will always have your maiden name. You can take certified copies to Social Security, MVA etc and that will be sufficient to have your name changed. But the original certificate will always have your name!
