Losing weight after first fitting

lilchameleon, on February 23, 2019 at 4:39 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 13

Did anyone lose weight after their first dress fitting? If so, how much? And did your seamstress flip out about it? I'm going to my first dress fitting on Monday. I've 15lbs, but I'd like to shed about 5 more. Though I'm nervous I'll screw things up for my seamstress if I do.

If I were you, I would discuss my plans with the seamstress at the first fitting. Depending on the timeline of the weight loss, maybe you can have your second fitting scheduled a little bit earlier to provide ample time to do the necessary alterations

My seamstress told me not to lost more than 10 lbs between my fittings. I would discuss with your seamstress to see what she recommends

I just went for my first fitting a couple weeks ago. My seamstress said not to lose anymore weight.
It really depends on your type of dress and how/where you lose the weight. I only lost about five pounds from picking up the dress till the first fitting and she is having to take it in a bit. On the flip side, I lost ten pounds before picking up the dress in November and it fit great. 🤷
I'd ask just to be sure.

I didn’t lose weight but gained a couple of pounds after the fitting. But my seamstress told me to try the dress on again a few weeks before the wedding and she could make any additional changes then. Hopefully I will lose the few pounds I gained and not have to let it back out some.

Talk with you seamstress. I had my first try on last week and I've gained weight since I ordered so my dress barely zipped. My seamstress said to come back in June and we will reassess then. I need to lose about 15 to 20 pounds since I know how much I weighed when I bought the dress.

I did! My seamstress ended up having to take in my dress 5 times because every week I’d go in after she altered it and when I tried it on it would be falling off. I have no idea how much weight I lost because I don’t own a scale. But she took it in each time with no issues. Even doing it for the last time the week of my wedding!

How much did you end up spending all together for alterations?

$500 which is what she quoted me at my first appointment. She didn’t charge me more for needing to take it in so many times.

Me seamstress would’ve killed me. We didn’t have extra time for her to keep readjusting as we had our wedding on a tight timeline. Looking at our wedding photos, I wish I had out more work in before fittings started, but it didn’t occur to me one those fittings started I’d be stuck where I was

Five to ten pound weight loss is never a problem for people about 120 pounds and up. Someone tiny, 95 pounds, keep it to 5-7 or straps may be so loose your bosom droops some, and with a strapless, your midriff band of the gown with cups or the strapless bra might need to be snugged in. She won't be upset. She will take an hour to fix it and charge you for it. Elegant gowns depend on a looser fit. They are cut with a couple of inches of ease, that is, at most points around the fabric of the dress should be at least 2 inches bigger than the body in it. This allows for the gentle swirl of the fabric as you move, so it catches the light differently, and satin and sparkly things shimmer. So for someone 130 pounds, a 10 lb loss means most of the dress, maybe a ¼ inch looser. Less on someone 160 or 250 pounds. BUT, when smaller slim women with less body fat lose weight, they lose it disproportionately. Not much fat anywhere, going from 110 to 100 lbs, the fatty tissue of the bust takes the big loss. And one of the only points where a dress should ever be snug, tightly fitted, is the band just below, and in a strapless with no other support, just above the bust. Skin tight fitting actually ruins a dress through the body, hips, things. Formal fabric weaves pull out of shape, and stretch, but do not contract. So as hours go by, every time you move, too tight dresses stretch into wrinkle, pulling the gown out of shape. But the midriff and upper bra area are reinforced underneath, so this does not happen. So consider your overall size. Do not stop weight loss if you have some fat to lose all over, or are bigger. At 175 pounds, 10-16 pounds might not even be an alteration. And if healthier, worth doing. But if very slim, be prepared for a need to deal with a refitting of support straps, or anchor points at the bust of a strapless. But always doable. Just a pain in the backside if you have lots of beads, crystals, or embellishment on the bodice edges, so individual beads must be removed, and put back, to cover alterations.

I did!. My seamstress was awesome though and she said that she would continue to pull it in if I continue to lose right up until my final fitting. she said the only thing that would concern her, is that if I lose too much, it might throw off the position of where she put the hooks for the bustle.

Judith, I don't know if any of this information is fact-checked or accurate, but I don't care - it is exactly what I wanted to hear! I've been so bent on trying to get to my "goal weight" before my first fitting (months before the wedding), that I've been driving myself crazy. Thank you for helping me take a breath, relax and enjoy this time. Smiley heart
