Legal Question — ghosted by our caterers

We are devastated to say the least. We booked our caterers over a year ago, did our tasting and fell in love with the food and the chef.

They offered us a special discount of 10% if we paid in full so we did. We even worked out a trade of service where I would develop a new website for them since I’m a web designer, and they would take a portion off of the linens and China and pay me in monthly increments separately. They paid me for the first month of their contract with me and then Covid happened. They informed us that bc all of their weddings for the upcoming wedding season until the fall had cancelled they had no money and were kicked out of their kitchen space.
I understood that and we never asked for a refund or anything because we knew they had fallen on hard times. I spoke with them 1.5 months ago and they informed us that they were closed for business but would of course honor our wedding and two other events bc they were in no position to pay people back. Understood.
We were so grateful that they were still honoring our wedding and even offered to help them find a kitchen rental for the event. We’ve gone above and beyond for these people. The wife of the chef who manages the company promised me that no matter what, they would be there. Fast forward to last week and I reached out to touch base with them and they haven’t replied to my calls, texts or emails and it appears she blocked my cellphone. My fiancé called her from his cell which he never has before and she answered. She sounded really sketchy and said she hasn’t heard from me even though I’ve tried contacting her for weeks! Then she said we could call her back after 4 pm and it seems like after she hung up with my fiancé she blocked him too.
At this point we’re out close to 9k and don’t know what to do. Does anyone have any advice? I’m still holding onto hope but this is crazy. This is what the contract says by the way.
I mean there’s no way this can be legal, right? Seems like they’ve taken our money and ran. Legal Question — ghosted by our caterers 1

You should hire an attorney ASAP. They will know best whether you can get your money back. Make sure you keep logs of all phone calls and emails. Sorry this happened to you

Oh man, I'm so sorry you're dealing with this! This definitely sounds sketchy, and I'd think about reaching out to a lawyer or your bank / credit card company (however you originally paid them). You paid for a service and they need to either work with you to fulfill that service or refund you!

The same thing happened to me with a venue/caterer as well. My parents went to their place of business and venue to get answers since they still has an operating restaurant. Luckily enough we got our money.
I really hope you have been able to remedy this situation! It really sucks how some businesses are conducting themselves right now.
