Dedicated June 2021

Lake Tahoe in June question, help please!

Ana, on March 30, 2021 at 4:39 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 8
So we were thinking of going to Lake Tahoe for our honeymoon in June, we recently visited in January which is when we got engaged Smiley heart but the weather after 8 o’clock at night was completely unbearable and we weren’t able to be outside. We are from Miami so very minimal cold is very cold for us.. I was just researching and saw that during June in Lake Tahoe the daytime is about 70 and at night time it’ll drop around 40°.. is that like very cold? Would it be the same type of cold that we felt in January? I don’t know if anyone could relate or has been there around that time that can give me a little bit more insight… Thank you!

40 is very cold. Not comfortable to sit outside without a heat lamp or big coat and fire

June isn’t the warmest month in Tahoe. Yes it cools down quite a lot at night. I used to live in Florida and now live in Reno so I’m in Tahoe a lot.
As long as it’s not windy, that temperature isn’t unbearable to me. You will definitely need a coat and closed shoes but it’s much more enjoyable than in January. I’m quite used to the cold now so 40s doesn’t bother me but I know that’s much colder than it is in Florida. Would you be willing to go in July or August? It will still cool down at night during those months but might be more bearable.

Everyone's cold tolerance is different, but for me, 40 is fine for being active outside, but I wouldn't want to sit still for very long in that temperature. There can be snow on the ground in Tahoe well into May (and all summer at higher elevations), so keep that in mind.

The daytime in June will be very nice for any activities you are interested it, and I doubt you would consider the nights "unbearable" for strolling on the beach or sitting at a fire pit. But it sounds like you wouldn't be comfortable eating dinner outside, for instance. Not least because you don't have the wardrobe for it (nor do you want to buy all that stuff for one-time use; don't need it in Miami!).

Also, you didn't mention swimming, but I personally think the lake is too cold for swimming at any point other than, like, the end of August. Plenty of people do swim there though.

I was at the lake on Sunday and people were swimming.... I put my foot in and that was enough haha.
I agree with you, August is really the only somewhat comfortable month to swim in the lake.

I used to swim in the lake as a kid, but now I am too wimpy. I don't mind cold air temperatures if I am dressed for it (I love the snow!), but I just do not like getting in cold water. Most of my family still swims in the lake May through October, but I stay dry on shore. I think they are weird; they think I am weird. Smiley tongue

Edited to add: one of my brothers has been swimming in Antarctica, so obviously I am right that HE is weird.

Oh yeah my husband is swimming in that lake in May too and he tries to get me to join him every time... I’m not sure why he keeps asking now hahaha
I love the snow too, this is actually my favorite time of the year because there’s still snow so I can ski, but it’s also beautiful temperatures and sunny.

    Cold is relative.

I live in the Northeast, and if it gets below 60, I start to complain.

...It's below 60 from about mid-October to late April. (Weird weather notwithstanding.)

That said, 40F is cold to most people. Keep in mind that it's only a little above freezing. Usually, in 40F weather, I'm wearing a scarf, hat, and coat. Gloves, less so, as I have pockets and will usually be walking/carrying things, but it's warm clothing weather.

And, as always, humidity will mess up your entire clothing calculation.

I love Tahoe!! It’s honestly one of my favorite places to vacation. We’ve visited in almost every season - and my cold tolerance is awful haha (even though I’m from the east coast originally!) I must say that 60 in Tahoe feels very different than 60 in Western NY, for instance, where I’m from. It’s warmer in my opinion bc you’re closer to the sun, if that makes sense, due to being in the mountains and the high elevation. I’ve not been in June so I can’t quite speak for that but I can tell you that we’ve had rain/sleet/snow/warmth all in the same weekend a few years ago when we went at the end of May for Memorial Day, and got extra sun burned another year when we went end of July when average weather was in the low 70s. It does get cool at night, so definitely bring a jacket if you are going to venture out at night. There’s a really cool little outdoor bar in the village square that has a ton of heat lamps and fires, and most restaurants / pubs will have the same setup so as long as you’re in a jacket you’ll be fine Smiley smile this is coming from someone who hates anything below 70 degrees and spent an entire 2 hours at the outdoor bar when it was 17 degrees out 😆 let me know if you’d like recommendations for anything! Enjoy!!
