Key West Honeymoon help please!!!

Jenny B., on September 16, 2012 at 1:09 AM Posted in Honeymoon 3 21

FH and I are planning to go to the Florida Keys for a few days for our honeymoon- we live in south Florida, it's maybe a 3 hour drive. I don't have a lot of time due to school starting back after July 4th weekend. I thought about Key West or Islamorada. We will be there over July 4th. Has anyone been to either place before? I have never been and don't really know where to look. We want some place relaxing, but some fun stuff to do. If you know of places to stay on a budget let me know please!!!

I tried that already. I just wanted someone who has already gone here because everyone has given me some great tips and advice here. There are so many islands, didn't know if there was a favorite.

I stayed in amazing bed and breakfast in Key West. It was right on Duval but up near the butterfly garden. It had a private tropical like pool in the back so when you were there you felt like you were in a tropical oasis but when you walked out the front door you were in walking distance to all the fun things to do. Key West can get crazy so a lot of the places are geared towards the college crowd with partying and such. I didn't want that BUT I did still want to be in walking distance to the bars at the same time if that makes sense?

It was kinda pricey but it was my 30th bday so we splerged for 2 nights... We drove down (lived in Tampa at the time) on our down we stayed in key largo for one night. Super cheap but the place was awesome too. No frills but clean and the grounds looked really cool. Unfortunately we didn't stay long enough to enjoy them but I would have loved to go back.

If your interested, I will try to find the names for you?

Ok advice from a south fl girl who visits keys 2x year. I u stay in islandmora stay at tranquility bay. Always be afraid of internet photos. They may have been taken in 1960 and photoshopped lol! Key west shoot for parrot key. They are operated by same chain and r fairly new (5 yrs) super maintained and less than an mile from Duvall but sleepy and peaceful on the bay . You MUST MUST MUST go on the dry tortugas ferry. That was one of tw coolest things ever . It's cheaperto go on the ferry vs seaplane . They don't tell u but u r allowed to bring ur own cooler with adult beverages. Bring lots of bottled water and beer !! And lots of sunscreen an Gatorade you will dehydrated !!! OH yeah and go to stock island (right north of key west) and go to hogfish restaurant . The locals all go there, hogfish sandwich was awesome and I had the best bloody Mary I've ever had! It's right on the water/canal and they have live music at night. decent price too . An we always rent scooters you can get around the island faster and they're a blast!

Key West is a great place for a few days. Being from Florida I know some of the native things to do if your into that kind of thing. Fogarty's is must eat at place in Key west. The Hampton Inn (over by the airport) has a great pool area with bar that is nice to just relax at. Also, if you want do go out snorkeling I recommend doing it with Danger Charters. We went out with them and they do snacks, wines, and cheeses along with eco-tours of kayaking and snorkeling. It was great to go out on the sunset cruise. The Key West Light house is a great place with beautiful views!

We are getting married in Key West!

If you can, eat at the restaurant on Sunset Key (the Westin property, its a private island). It's AWESOME. Kinda pricey though.

The bar at the Southernmost hotel is really chill, and it's a beach bar. The bathrooms suck though.

Check out the Southernmost properties. You could probably find a good deal. Or, look at renting a 2-bed condo - it can be much cheaper.

Definitely rent bikes and bike the island. It sounds scary - it's not. It's absolutely beautiful!

You have to go to the Conch Republic and get conch fritters. AAHHHMazing. They have a really good raw bar too, and happy hour, if that's your thing.

    So excited for you!

When I lived in Miami I would go to Key West all the time. I took F there and we stayed at a bed and breakfast called KEy Lime Inn (Name might be changed now) but it was a block off duval street on the east end. It was reasonably priced and near to the action, but far enough away not to have noise all night long.

Some things to do, would be a snorkel cruise and dinner cruise at susnset, visit mallory square at sunset (there are all kinds of artists and performers, make sure you have a drink in hand to walk with). Of course there is sloppy joes, and fat tuesdays. Another fun place where we had dinner adn stayed for drinks was IRish Kevins.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you would like more information

Not sure what kind of honeymoon you are wanting, but if it's a relaxing one, Key West is not the place to go unless you are really into the bars, especially at night. I would highly recommend that you rent a bike from the time you are there or one of those lil rental cars that goes no more than 30mph to see more of the Island. If you are wanting to relax, I would stay near the Southern Most Point near the beach for a quieter honeymoon.

Thank you everyone for your input. We want to relax during the day, but have some fun stuff to do at night. We are not party animals, but we know how to have a good time. I don't like the ocean (too afraid of sharks and stuff) so snorkeling is out, but I love the idea of a dinner cruise. Ashley G can you pm me more information? Thank you!

Key West is good for nightlife and touristy stuff, and the Dry Tortugas park is pretty cool (although get dramamine if you get seasick - one of my friends did not enjoy the ride).

Islamorada/Tavernier/Key Largo is the place to go for snorkeling or diving...the reefs off the Upper Keys are world famous and absolutely incredible. John Pennekamp is a good place to find a tour, but pretty much every hotel offers boating trips for both snorkeling and fishing.

I highly suggest staying at a bed and breakfast! We stayed at one, which was nice and quiet with 2 pools. You want to stay on the southernmost side of Duval, the closer you get to Mallory Square, the louder it is. You can walk the length of Duval in like an hour or two. You can pretty much get anywhere on foot or bike. Rent bikes, not scooters! Scooters are dangerous! We saw a nasty accident and many near misses when we were there.

There's the Hemingway house with all the 6 toed cats. And then Audubon house is nice and peaceful. There's also a museum or two which are nice on a hot day. Blue Heaven is a awesome restaurant with chickens running around while you eat outside. My sister liked walking around the cemetery, but she likes those things. There's also a super creepy ghost tour (I hated every minute of it b/c I'm a huge wimp!)

I have done a day trip to key west and it was a lot of fun. A coworker goes early and said to stay at the pier house or the westin. Although pricey she said they are the best places to stay. One of them has a private beach. We toured the truman house, boring. And we went to the lighthouse, interesting. Also don't forget to check out the sunset, one of the best you will see.

Just stumbled upon this thread and had to put my 2 cents in Smiley winking Key West is one of our favorite vacations (2X/year) FH proposed on a private sunset dinner cruise last May! If you can check out Islescapes, Captain Alex is amazing, grilling your dinner on the back of the boat while you enjoy the most beautiful sunset! Definitely rent bikes, not scooters (know to many people who have crashed) Eaton Bikes has good deals and are just a phone call away if anything happens. B&B's we are in transition as the one we frequent changed management. Do not go to Heron House Court though, great place but the pool was gross and trust me, you need a pool after spending the day exploring. Check out Fort Zachary Taylor for the best beach down there, small charge to enter. Restaurants - BO's (best cracked conch) Conch Shack in front of the Aquarium entrance (best conch fritters) Blue Heaven (best breakfast) anywhere at the marina, bight (best happy hour) Irish Kevins (best entertainment, by far) cont...

Porch (best beer and wine bar to people watch) Hogfish (best tacos) Mallory Square (great sunset entertainment) Cuban Coffee Queen (great coffee and egg sammies) Old Town Bakery (mmm... need I say more) Latitudes or Hot Tin Roof (romantic sunset dinner) Kermits (best key lime pie) Finnegans Wake (best cheesey ball goodness) On Tripadvisor, the Key West forum is very active with locals giving advice. We are getting married just below Key Largo and the upper keys are much quieter, more for fishing, snorkeling, diving, sunbathing and quieter happy hours. Always good live music though. Good luck and have fun!

Hi! I have stayed at the double tree in Key west. It was very nice, they had shuttles that went to Duval so its great you don't have to drive.

I also stayed in Islamorada ( cant remember the name, however its quieter and more romantic than Key west. Also many more adults) its a 20 min drive to key west I believe.

Anywhere you decide have a wonderful time! Congrats!
