june Couples Postponing due to Covid-19: Encouragement

Natalie, on March 30, 2020 at 5:07 PM Posted in Community Conversations 44 110

This message is for any couple, particularly couples with June weddings planned, facing the decision of whether or not to postpone their wedding amidst the coronavirus pandemic.

I want to start off by saying that you are not alone and your feelings are valid. The decision to postpone your wedding is painful, difficult, and filled with anxiety - BUT - the way you handle it does not have to be. Let me explain our situation to hopefully put you at ease and help you make a decision.

Our wedding was planned for June 13, 2020 and we decided to postpone out of an abundance of caution. We felt we didn't have any other choice despite June seeming far enough out to not have to make that call.

I spent the whole month of March agonizing over what to do in this situation - many days and nights I sobbed because I've waited my whole life for this wedding and spent the last two years planning it down to the "T". Our venue notified us that their April couples had to postpone due to forced closures and was becoming more and more booked as other couples were facing this same decision, so we were having to decide on postponing to a date a whole year from now: July 17, 2021.

I paused - prayed - and spent days searching for guidance. Once I de-cluttered my brain, the decision was clear. When it comes down to it, marriage is a commitment between two people and a wedding is a party that can be rescheduled. Postponement does not change our commitment to each other.

If you've been planning a big wedding like us in California with around 220 guests, and your heart is set on having the same wedding with the same amount of people, then you must consider the following:

1. Everyone's health and safety - especially your elderly guests. Are you prepared to put loved ones at risk?

- No.

2. Would your guests be comfortable attending such a large gathering?

- Probably not. The social distancing ban is in effect until the beginning of May. That doesn't leave much time with June approaching to "return to normal" or even begin to feel normal.

3. With many people currently out of work, would your guests be financially stable enough to make the trip to your wedding after barely getting back to work?

- Maybe, but maybe not. We don't want to put our guests in that position.

4. Are you okay with having to downsize your guest count if the large gathering ban has not been lifted by then?

- No. We invited everyone who is important to us and want everyone to celebrate our big day. Downsizing our guests count is just not an option.

5. Have you had to cancel any other wedding related events? If you have, is the memory of having to do this going to effect your happiness leading up to your wedding?

- Yes, we had to cancel all of them. I want the typical wedding experience. I want the bridal shower and bachelorette weekend getaway and I want the same for my fiance. we deserve to celebrate and be celebrated!

After discussing each of those points, there was no other option in our minds but to postpone. As painful as it was to come to that conclusion, we realized that we want everyone at our wedding - we don't want to have to cut it down to a small gathering of 10 people. We want the party that we've been planning and we don't want to have to cut anything out. We don't want any bad memories surrounding the most important day of our lives and would be heartbroken if anyone fell ill at our wedding. Its just not worth the risk.

Once we officially decided to postpone, all of my anxiety melted away.

We are willing to wait to have the wedding we want rather than the wedding that the coronavirus would force us to have.

I hope other couples out there facing this decision can find comfort in knowing that you can still have the wedding of your dreams, you just have to take control of the situation and make the best of it. Don't let this virus dictate the outcome of your special day. Postpone if that means you'll be happier knowing that nothing has to change except the date.

Thank you for this - we are (were) date twins! I confirmed my postponement today and am grateful and relieved we made the decision with many of the same conclusions you’ve made. I’m grateful for an amazing partner who I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with regardless of the day ❤️

Since this will be a seasonal thing based on Dr Fauci’s comment, do you think you could be going through this again next year?

I think anything is possible, as we've seen, and it would be naive to assume otherwise.

However, I believe our country has learned to better equip itself should such a pandemic hit us again in the future.

The main reason why there are social distancing guidelines and gathering bans in place is because hospitals across the country are overwhelmed - we are not currently prepared to meet the needs of those effected, but we will be able to going forward given enough time.

Very true. If we don’t come up with a vaccine or something compatible we will all end up back in the same boat. The fall and winter seasons is when it hits the hardest so regardless if we are prepared or not this virus will be around.

Not necessarily. Even if there is no vaccine by then, we will be much better prepared to handle another outbreak. The effects would be far less chaotic than what is presently happening.

Just like with the regular flu- it is year round, comes and goes but we are prepared to handled caring for those who fall ill when our hospitals are not overwhelmed.

I work in medical and heard the same thing. If I postpone until fall. I'm worried I'll be right back in the same boat. Hopefully the treatments they are looking into will work. We don't even know if this will come back again. I hope not. Best of luck!

Such a beautiful thoughtful post & i thank you for directing me here. It put my mind at ease to know im not alone. Hate we all are going through this. I wish everyone the best with whatever decision have to be made. I turn to this forum rather than fb where ppl post more negative thoughts on people not being able to get married. I always told my FH & family its not about the ceremony to me it about our commitment to each other & God. We can still have a spiritual commitment to one another on that day 6.6.20 & if the Lord's WILL later have a ceremony/reception w/family. I prayed & passed it to God to do whats best. So bless it be ALL💖stay safe

Your post feels almost God sent. I was just going to post that I need a push to postpone my wedding. We are June 14, 2020. From looking at other countries it is a major possibilty that this will extend to past June. I too worried that If I waited til May to postpone that there would be no dates available. We called our venue and the only dates available are july 4th this year and june 13 next year. We have decided to choose next years date. July is too close. What if we would have to postpone again. June 13 seems like the safest choice. Besides it would be too stressful leading up to a wedding in June with all of this going on. My veil has yet to come in, order in october and groomswear has to be picked out. The peace of knowing that everyone will be safe is worth it. It sucks to have to wait another year but now I can relax that most of the hard work is done.

Looking at your points they just make sense. We would have to miss out on bridal showers bachelorette parties rehearsal dinners. Of course the biggest reason would be I would not be able to forgive myself if someone caught coronavirus at my wedding. Thank you for writing this!

    Great article.

No matter what happens, my fiance and I are getting married on June 6th. Whether plans go as planned or not. We have waited to long to find true love within each other and have had an honorable courtship. We both don't mind having an intimate ceremony. Although it was not apart of the original plan, many are broadcasting their ceremony via video calls.

Our wedding party can be postponed. But it's just too early for us to make decisions. I am hopeful but when I get discouraged I remember the Bible scripture at Isaiah 30:15- Your strength is keeping calm and showing trust.

So I trust in my heavenly Father to allow me to have the wedding I deserve, even if it comes in a different form.

Thank you so much for this detailed post! As a June 13th bride, I am in the exact same boat and looking to do the same. I’m not postponing to a date later this year because too much is still up in the air and we don’t know how long this will last. It could be many more months for all we know!! I’m happy you were able to pick a date next July and feel some relief. I am trying to convince my venue to do the same, but right now they’re only looking at future dates this Summer/ Fall, which to me is just still not a realistic option.
Anyway, back to your post, this is so on point and thanks again for sharing!
