Jamaica fear with online reading

Ana, on April 5, 2021 at 8:05 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 6
So I stumbled upon the advisory for Jamaica and it was scary! They are on a “don’t travel unless necessary” alert and reading inline there crime rates are through the roof! I had been considering taking my honey moon there to one of their resorts.. now Im feeling extremely fearful.. can anyone vouch or Input please?

I would just recommend doing your proper research when finding a resort and stay at the resort for your trip, don’t venture into town without a guide or hotel staff. Keep your jewelry on you on don’t bring it, depending on the hotel sometimes I trust it on my body more than the safe.

I agree with pp about doing your research, I'd also make sure you understand if the danger is considered wide-spread or more focused on one of the big cities. We'd booked a trip a few years ago, and immediately after, there was a strong travel warning issued -- the State Department was warning of a potential civil war! Yikes! However, at the that time, the primary focus of the danger was around Kingston. We were flying into Montego Bay and then the all-inclusive resort was picking us up and transferring us to the resort. We decided to go ahead and go. However, we NEVER traveled off the extensive resort property except for day trips arranged by the resort. We were surprised to realize the resort was completely walled and there were armed guards at the entry gate -- not really what we'd experienced in any other travel.... Security was heavy at the resort; the beaches were completely private and NO one but registered guests could gain entry. One day a week, the resort brought in carefully screened local crafts people who set up kind of an open market, so we got the experience of "shopping local," but within the safety of the resort. The resort property was huge, with multiple pools, a water park, a large beach with various water sport options, etc., so we never felt "trapped" and we just enjoyed the the all-inclusive experience. We did a couple of day trips -- Dune's River Falls, ziplining, touring the Rose Hall plantation, etc., but all were arranged and travel provided by the resort. Given those parameters, we felt very safe and it was one of our favorite family vacations. Good luck!

I would personally check out other places like Saint Croix, or Bora-Bora. Even Maldives has a Travel advisory. I feel like the odds of anything happening to you in Jamaica are slim to none, but the travel advisory would mentally bother me the whole time

I’ll be honest, I did not feel incredibly safe the last time I went to Jamaica. If you are looking for safe tropical destinations, we have always felt completely safe in Bora Bora, Turks and Caicos, and the Virgin Islands.

Another safe option would be Hawaii

Can you explain why you didn’t feel safe? We’re looking to go to Jamaica in a week.
