Italy/paris Honeymoon Covid19

Alejandra, on April 9, 2020 at 12:59 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 10
Hey guys!
My fiancé and I booked our honeymoon to Europe in December before everything started getting worse. We are supposed to go from August 24-September 6. I don’t know if I should cancel it or wait it out and see? We have the flights booked and we were looking at booking the hotel and activities April/May but we don’t know if we should reserve anything else. Any advice would help! Thanks Smiley smile

I am not sure how things will be in August and it depends on the country. I would start looking into backup options that are closer to home.

I would personally look into cancelling. While things are starting to improve over there, it may take awhile for them to recover. Also, many hotels in Italy (and maybe France, not sure) have been used to house the sick during this pandemic, so it may be some time before they are fully sanitized and brought back to a condition where they can operate as a hotel again. Also, who knows what will be open in terms of restaurants, activities, etc as the country is finally able to properly mourn everyone they lost. I imagine things will be pretty bleak for a bit. I personally wouldn't want that on my honeymoon.

We planned to go to Italy late Sept/early October, but we haven't even booked the tickets as just when we were looking to do it the pandemic hit. I just cannot imagine that Italy is going to be back up and running and ready for visitors by then. My guess is they will still be reeling from the devastation. We haven't chosen an alternative honeymoon (and honestly, I am not even sure our July 25th wedding will go on, so that complicates it a bit). I will absolutely go to Italy when it is safe to do so.

Unfortunately, I would look into cancelling and getting a refund Smiley sad These are two major hot-spots and it seems very unlikely that people from the US will be allowed to travel to these places by August. I'm so sorry Smiley sad

We are going to nearby Croatia, planned for 8/3, and will wait to decide. Italy and France are of course hit worse. However, check your cancellation policies. We have until June or July for all of our hotels and American Airlines has already been flexible with cancelling flights (we actually cancelled and rebooked to get better seats at the currently discounted rates).

First, check with the airlines, they may not refund you but instead rebook you. Unless they cancel. Wait on the hotels and activities. It is true that if the situation persists in the US that you may not be allowed in. President Macron was supposed to give a speech this evening to prolong our quarantine. So we are still waiting. As far as I know hotels are being used by the homeless and no sick persons are staying in them. Any serious cases are hospitalized for patient safety. All others are at home.

Second, if we are able to return to normal, than please do go on your honeymoon. The economic situation is desperate and tourism helps get people back on their feet. In France we have gone through 3 full months of interrupted activity. It is vital to recharge the economy on a global scale. On a half full look, you might have more fun with less tourists and get a more authentic feel for both countries.

I hope they open up Southern Europe in August but this is the case!

The good news is that Italy is past the peak. France might be close.

However, we really don't know how long this is all going to last - if we're going to get a second wave, if it'll be hard to open back up...

The best thing to do, I think, is to have a Plan B, and to be flexible. Try to hold off on cancelling/rescheduling until you have to... but do know you may need to.

Stay flexible they seem to be pass their peak but I'm only wary as I've heard hotels were being used to house homeless and some sick people so they might need some deep cleaning. I wouldn't cancel just yet as you deserve your honeymoon but I would start to plan for a back-up just in case.
